Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Long Beach Ice Dogs of the ECHL, a proud affiliate of the Boston Bruins, have announced they have signed center and former Anaheim Duck Alexei Smirnov. Per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Smirnov, 24, played last season for the Omsk Avangard in the Russian Elite League and recorded five points in 28 games. The 6'3" 215 pound center played 52 games in two seasons with the Anaheim Ducks and scored three goals, three assists, six points, along with 20 penalty minutes. Smirnov has also appeared in 135 games in the American Hockey League with the Cincinatti Mighty Ducks and scored 25 goals, 22 assists, for 47 points, along with 99 penalty minutes.
Alexei was selected in the first round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft (12th overall) by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Smirnov attended the Vancouver Canucks Training Camp prior to signing with the Long Beach Ice Dogs. The native of Tver, Russia has never played a game in the ECHL. Smirnov will join former Anaheim Duck Kip Brennan in the Ice Dogs lineup.
"Alexei adds something that the Ice Dogs desperately need right now," Said Head Coach and General Manager Rick Adduonno. "Smirnov has a great shot and an eye for the net. He will add NHL and AHL experience in both zones for the Ice Dogs. Any time you insert a former 1st round draft pick to your lineup it is going to benefit your hockey club."
The Ice Dogs, fresh off the ECHL All Star break, host the Alaska Aces, this Friday night, January 19th at 7:30pm on "Chippendale's Ladies Night" where fans will receive an Ice Dogs Team Poster.
