Gladiators Bite Everblades 4-3

Jon Awe collected his ECHL record-setting 17th power play goal of the season and Andy Contois scored the game winner for Gwinnett late in the third period to lift the Gladiators to a 4-3 win over the Florida Everblades on Friday night on the Your Best Rate Financial Home Ice at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. With the win, the Gladiators improve to 23-12-4 on the season and move into sole possession of first place in the ECHL's South Division.

Florida took a 1-0 lead on the Gladiators with a power play goal 8:22 into the first period. Chris Dyment slid into the slot on the power play and took a centering pass from Jonathan Lehun out of the corner and ripped a shot over the shoulder of Gladiators netminder Dan Turple for the marker. Ernie Hartlieb also had a helper on the goal for the Everblades.

Jon Awe set a new ECHL record for power play goals by a defenseman in a single season as he collected his 17 power play goal of the season just 54 seconds into the second period. Awe ripped a slap shot from the left wing point past Florida netminder Craig Kowalski. Brad Schell and Chad Painchaud posted the assists on the power play goal for Gwinnett.

Gwinnett took a 2-1 lead on the Everblades on Scott Lehman's first goal of the season. Walking down the right wing, Lehman just threw the puck at the net and beat Kowalski ranging across the crease as the puck just trickled past the netminder. Lehman's goal 6:47 into the second period came unassisted for Gwinnett.

Brad Schell's 18th goal of the season gave Gwinnett a 3-1 lead as he redirected a bouncing puck in the slot past Kowalski for the marker just 7 seconds after Lehman's goal. Jon Sitko and Colton Fretter posted the assists as the hooked up to set up the goal moving the puck into the Florida zone.

Franklin MacDonald got the Everblades back within a goal as he ripped a slap shot over the shoulder of Turple, off the crossbar and into the back of the net for the marker. Steve Czech collected an assist on the goal at the 15:05 mark of the second period.

Florida tied the game at three with 4:37 left in the third period as Ernie Hartlieb was able to pick up a loose puck that deflected off the skate of a Gladiator and across the crease before jamming the puck to the far post past Turple for the goal. Reggie Berg and Brett Peterson posted the assists for the Everblades.

Gwinnett answered just 45 seconds later as Andy Contois ripped a slap shot over the shoulder of Kowalski to regain the lead for the Gladiators. Fretter dropped the puck off for Contois, sliding in over the Florida blue line to set up the goal. Schell also had an assist on the goal for Gwinnett at the 16:08 mark of the third period.

Turple made 27 saves for the Gladiators in the win. Gwinnett went 1-for-4 on the man advantage in the victory.
