Ice Dogs Fall To Idaho, 2-1

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach Ice Dogs (34-16-5) could not manage enough offense to come back against the defending Kelly Cup Champion Idaho Steelheads (28-20-3), falling 2-1 in front of 7,447 fans. It was the largest crowd at the Long Beach Arena in three seasons.

After a scoreless first period, Idaho got on the board first, 5:55 into the second period on a goal by Bobby Russell. Just 1:04 later, they took a 2-0 lead when Lance Galbraith scored the eventual game winner. The Ice Dogs were able to cut the deficit in half at 13:32 on a goal by Joe Cardarelli, but the score would remain 2-1 until the final buzzer.

Frank Doyle was credited with the win for Idaho, making 18 saves, while Olivier Michaud took the loss with 19 saves. Neither team was able to score on the power play, with Idaho going 0-4 and Long Beach 0-2. It was the second straight loss for the Ice Dogs, who had previously won four in a row. The Ice Dogs remained a point ahead of Alaska for the West Division lead, as Alaska lost tonight in a shootout to Fresno, 2-1.
