San Diego Gulls News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Mark Pederson notched a hat trick and Guillaume Fournier scored four points, but it wasn't enough as the Bakersfield Condors over-powered the San Diego Gulls 6-4, Saturday night, before 8,562 at Rabobank Arena.

The Gulls had two one-goal leads early in the contest, but the Condors came back each time to tie it. San Diego also came back from two one-goal deficits, but couldn't re-tie it once Bakersfield grabbed their third one-goal cushion. Paul Rosebush, who netted a hat trick for the Condors, sealed their win with an empty-netter.

With the loss, San Diego (27-20-6) falls 10 points behind the third-place Condors and six points back of the Fresno Falcons for the fourth and final playoff spot in the West Division. Bakersfield (31-15-8) is now just three points behind the first-place Long Beach Ice Dogs and two points back of the second-place Alaska Aces.

Pederson gave the Gulls a 1-0 lead 4:37 into the first period with his first goal of the night. After grabbing a pass from Fournier, Sylvain Deschatelets rushed down the wing and sent a backhand pass to Pederson, who just got enough wood on the feed to slip it past Bakersfield goaltender Yutaka Fukufuji.

Former Gull Kevin St. Jacques tied it at 6:50 with his 12th marker of the season. It happened on a two-on-one rush, but St. Jacques did all the work himself, faking a pass then slipping a shot past San Diego netminder Mathieu Chouinard.

Pederson regained the lead for the Gulls with a power-play tally at 9:22 of the first, again connecting with linemates Deschatelets and Fournier. The veteran forward grabbed another Deschatelets set-up pass in front of the net and shoved it just inside the right post for his second goal of the night.

Bakersfield, however, answered again at the 14:43 mark of the opening frame, making it a 2-2 game. Rosebush got the tally, his first of the game, picking up a loose puck after Todd Alexander partially fanned on his shot.

Rosebush came calling again 9:07 into the second, giving the Condors a 3-2 lead. After Mike Hofstrand held the puck inside the San Diego zone, it came to the bottom of the right circle where Rosebush slammed in a shot just underneath the crossbar.

This time it was the Gulls' turn to answer and Pederson promptly obliged at 18:46 of the second with his hat trick goal. David Karpa grabbed the puck right after a faceoff inside the Bakersfield zone and unleashed a shot that bounced off Fournier into the left circle. That's where Pederson was and, while being checked to ice, poked it past an out-of-position Fukufuji for his 13th marker of the year.

The seesaw battle continued in the third as the Condors grabbed a 4-3 advantage at the 2:18 mark. Defenseman Ryan Gillis gave them their second lead of the game, jumping into the play and redirecting home Lars-Peder Nagel's centering pass for his sixth goal.

But Fournier re-tied it at 5:39 with San Diego's second power-play goal. After battling in the left wing corner, Fournier dug out the puck, skated to the net and roofed a shot over Fukufuji's shoulder for his 14th tally. It was also his fourth point of the night, three of which were assists.

Back came the Condors again, however, as they gained a 5-4 lead on Ryan Coole's first goal of the season at 9:26. It came just after Hofstrand won an end zone faceoff back to the point, where Coole blasted a slapper past a screened Chouinard.

Rosebush capped the scoring and clinched the Bakersfield win, as he potted an empty-net goal with just two seconds left. It was his third goal of the game and 17th marker of the season.
