Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Florence, South Carolina - Sunday, February 27) The Checkers finally got what they deserved Sunday afternoon, claiming a 5-2 win over the Pee Dee Pride in Florence, South Carolina. In their previous two games of their three-games in three-day weekend road trip, the Checkers outplayed their opponent but lost both games, one in overtime.

Sunday was different however as Charlotte overcame an early Pee Dee goal by scoring five, unanswered goals in the 5-2 triumph. Dusty Jamieson scored a pair of goals for the Checkers while Jason Dawe, Ryan Lang and Eddie Pershin added single tallies. Goalie Alex Westlund earned his 20th win of the season with 34 saves. The victory also snapped Charlotte's three-game winless streak.

"We finally got something to show for our efforts today," remarked Coach Derek Wilkinson. "After we gave up that early goal the guys buckled down and dominated play in the first two periods."

Charlotte fell behind 1-0 just 4:20 into the game as Gregg Johnson's shot deflected off a skate and by Westlund.

The Checkers quickly came back with a pair of goals in a thirty-four second span. Ryan Cuthbert set up Jamieson at the side of the Pee Dee goal for his 25th of the season at 8:25 to tie the game at 1-1. Charlotte struck right back at 8:59 as Steve MacIntyre's shot from the point was deflected in by Dawe for a 2-1 Checkers advantage.

Late in the period while Charlotte was short-handed, Dwight Helminen launched a pass off the glass that sprung Lang off on a breakaway. The rookie centerman tucked the puck under Pride goalie Sebastian LaPlante for a 3-1 Checkers first-period lead. For a third consecutive game, Charlotte held a large first-period shot advantage by outshooting Pee Dee 18-7.

In the second period Charlotte picked up right where it left off in the first. Five minutes into the middle frame, Pershin launched a 35 foot blast from the high slot that beat Pride goalie Nick Boucher, who replaced LaPlante after the first period for a 4-1 Checkers advantage.

Charlotte increased its lead later in the period to 5-1, as Mike Wirll found Jamieson just to the right of the crease where he fired a shot in over Boucher's shoulder.

A third period goal by the Pride's Brett Roat narrowed the gap to 5-2, but the Pride could get no closer as the Checkers and Westlund slammed the door for the three-goal win.

The win allowed Charlotte to raise its record to 32-20-4 for 68 points, while Pee Dee dropped its fourth straight and fell to 25-26-3 for 53 points.

Charlotte will conclude its five-game road trip Friday night at Atlantic City when it meets the Boardwalk Bullies. The Checkers will return home to Cricket Arena the following night, Saturday, March 5 to host the Greenville Grrrowl at 7:00 p.m.
