Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC â The Victoria Salmon Kings started the week playing host to Victoria-born, Florida Panther product Sean O'Connor and the San Diego Gulls. The Salmon Kings and the Gulls split the two game series with Victoria winning 5-2 on Tuesday and the Gulls coming back on Wednesday with the 4-1 victory. The Salmon Kings started 12 skaters on both of the nights with the bench eventually shortening to only 10 skaters and no defensemen by the third period of game two.
The Las Vegas Wranglers made their first trip to Vancouver Island to open with game one of a three game series on Friday. The Wranglers beat the Salmon Kings with a last minute goal to make the score 4-3. Game two was Saturday with a similar story line as the rest of the week. The Victoria Salmon Kings came out to play hockey but came out just short. The game winning goal slid past goaltender Dan Blackburn at 19:59 of the second period and Victoria continued to get none of the bounces losing to Vegas 4-3 for the second straight night.
The Salmon Kings roster situation continues to be a story as it has for all of 2005. Decimated by injuries, General Manager Bryan Maxwell added three players, waived one and shuffled his IR. Into the line-up is forwards Greg Keith and Mike Ikeda and defenseman Kevin Hoffman. Out of the line-up was Ryan Esselmont. Brad Dexter played his first game in almost two months on Friday, after suffering a shoulder injury in early January. Unfortunately Corey Smith went into the boards hard and looks to have re-injured his ankle. Smith joins Mark Smith, Rob Voltera and Aaron Plumb on the thirty day IR while Ryan Finnerty and Craig Zubersky are on the seven day.

Week in Review
Tuesday February 22, 2005 vs. San Diego Gulls â W5-2
In their first game at home since the events of 2/16 the Victoria Salmon Kings played excellent hockey. The return of Corey Smith to the line-up quickened the tempo, and the Salmon Kings drubbed the Gulls 5-2. Jason Hegberg found a new friend called twine, three times, for the first hat-trick in franchise history, and the 12 Salmon Kings dressed, played sixty minutes of error free hockey.
Wednesday February 23, 2005 vs. San Diego Gulls â L4-1
There was very little gas in the tank for Wednesday's re-match and the score showed it, with the Gulls beating the Salmon Kings 4-1. Mattieu Chouinard replaced Eddy Ferhi in goal for San Diego, but he didn't really play a factor as the Salmon Kings struggled to mount the offense they did the night before. Only 10 skaters started the third for the Salmon Kings with both Corey Smith and Nate Forster leaving the game. The Gulls had goals from Ian Forbes, Nick Ganga, Sean O'Connor and Sylvain Deschatelets with the only response coming from forward made defenseman Chris Corrinet.
Friday February 25, 2005 vs. Las Vegas Wranglers â L4-3
The Salmon Kings put up a stiff challenge on Friday but were playing with a warm puck. None of the bounces went Victoria's way and with the game tied at three, thirty seconds left, the Wranglers scored the game winning goal. It was the only time in the game that the Salmon Kings were on their heels and it ended up costing them the whole night's effort. It was fast paced end to end hockey and the Salmon Kings benefited from the excellent play of Mike Josephson and two newcomers Mike Ikeda and Kevin Hoffman. Greg Keith played in his second game with the Salmon Kings.
Saturday February 26, 2005 vs. Las Vegas Wranglers â L4-3
Saturday's match against the Wranglers was again a close one. Marc Magliarditi started his second straight game for Vegas while Dan Blackburn had the honours for the Salmon Kings. The Salmon Kings beat Magliarditi early, but not often, and gave up the game winning goal with a second left in the middle period. Victoria played well in the third, but was only able to get one of the two goal deficit back, and dropped the game to a familiar 4-3 final.
