Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
BEAUMONT, Texas â Mississippi goaltender Phil Sauve made 36 saves on his 25th birthday to backstop the Sea Wolves to a 2-1 triumph over the Texas Wildcatters at Ford Arena.
"Sauve played extremely well," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "It was a game that we were banking on and Sauve along with the rest of the guys got the job done. It will be nice to go home for a Tuesday game against Florida. I'll be looking for the same type of effort that we had today."
In the first period, Sauve looked sharp making 18 saves to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.
The Sea Wolves got on the scoreboard at 2:18 of the second period. Nicolas Corbeil picked off a pass from Wildcatters captain Brian Stacey and waltzed in on a breakaway then lifted a backhand over the right shoulder of goaltender Phil Osaer. Corbeil's 12th goal of the season was an unassisted marker.
Mississippi (27-20-4, 58 points) took advantage of a fortunate bounce to make it 2-0 later in the middle stanza. The puck ricocheted off the end glass in front of the Texas net and Anthony Battaglia batted it in at the 11:08 mark for his team-leading 22nd of the year and fourth in as many games. Assists went to Bates Battaglia, who has points in four straight and Louis Dumont, who extended his point streak seven games.
Texas (10-31-10, 30 points) led the shot department 28-27 through two periods, but Sauve continued to keep the Wildcatters off the scoresheet.
The Wildcatters solved Sauve on the 30th shot of the game. Andrew Ianiero deposited his 16th tally of the campaign at the top of the crease. John Snowden and James DeMone collected helpers.
But Sauve made a total of eight stops in the third period to preserve the victory.
Mississippi went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Texas failed to convert on four chances with the man advantage. Sea Wolves outshot the Wildcatters 38-37.
The Sea Wolves return home for their next game at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday against the Florida Everblades at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
