Hitmen Get Past Tigers, 7-3
December 1, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Calgary Hitmen News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - Sean Tschigerl scored his first hat-trick of the season and third of his Western Hockey League career to propel the Calgary Hitmen to a 7-3 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday night at Co-op Place.
It was a rough start for the Hitmen who found themselves trailing 2-0 just 95 seconds in but a powerful finish which saw the visitors score seven of the games last eight goals.
Among the Tschigerl work was a penalty shot strike which sent the Hitmen to the dressing room after 20 minutes with a 3-2 lead. Calgary owned a 4-3 advantage after 40 minutes then erased any thoughts of a Tigers comeback when Keets Fawcett and the Tschigerl hat-trick marker came just nine seconds apart at 7:48 and 7:57 into the third period.
Oliver Tulk with his team-leading 15th goal, Carter Yakemchuk with his 12th and Carson Wetsch with his ninth also found the back of the net for the visitors who finished their three-game Central Division road trip with a record of 1-1-1.
Calgary carried the play most of the night outshooting Medicine Hat 40-26 with Hitmen goaltender Ethan Buenaventura making 23 stops to record the win and a milestone, eclipsing 2,000 career regular season saves.
Andrew Basha scored twice for Medicine Hat and Shane Smith added a single.
With the victory Calgary improves to 11-11-3 while Medicine Hat drops to 16-8-2.
The Hitmen are back on home ice Sunday, Dec. 3 for one of the most anticipated games of the season. They will host the Prince Albert Raiders in the Teddy Bear Toss powered by ENMAX. Game time is 4:00 p.m. at Scotiabank Saddledome with fans asked to bring a new or gently used stuff toy to the game to toss on the ice when the Hitmen score their first goal. This season there is a charitable ask for 29,000 bears to be shared by more than 70 local agencies. More than 16,370 seats have been sold with additional tickets still available at HitmenHockey.com.
