Grizzlies Hammer Out 2-1 Shootout Win In Stockton

January 15, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release

Stockton, California - Utah goaltender Mitch O'Keefe (12-5-1-1) stopped another season-high 42 of 43 shots as the Utah Grizzlies (17-15-2-2) battled for a 2-1 shootout win over the Stockton Thunder Friday night in California.

Despite being outshot 18-11 in the first period, Tim Crowder fed James Sixsmith on a shorthanded two-on-one for his eighth goal of the year at 17:21 of the period. The Sixsmith goal took place in his first game since rejoining Utah after spending the last two months in the AHL with Bridgeport.

The Thunder tied things up at one 10:13 into the second period on a Chris D'Alvise even-strength goal as Stockton would get a puck past O'Keefe for the only time on the night.

Utah outshot Stockton 14-9 in the third period and appeared to have the go-ahead goal as Kyle Radke threw a puck in that Patrick Asselin knocked in. However after a short conference, referee Tim Mayer waved off the goal, ruling it went in off of a high-stick, sending Grizzlies captain Ryan Kinasewich and the Utah bench into a fit of rage.

The Grizzlies though kept their cool and were able to force the game into overtime. Utah started the OT shorthanded four-on-three for a full two minutes following a high-sticking minor at the end of regulation. Again, Utah which finished the night 6-6 on the penalty-kill to only two power-plays, hung tight and held Stockton to only a shot during the stretch.

Utah fell behind 1-0 in the shootout but got goals from AJ Perry and Brett Parnham to take a 2-1 lead as Mitch O'Keefe shut the door on the final three Stockton shots and Utah picked up the victory.

Utah completes their season-long eight-game road trip Saturday in Stockton. Face-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. The Grizzlies return home Friday, January 22 to host Ontario at the E-Center at 7:05 p.m.
