South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC -The South Carolina Stingrays (26-9-2-4) shutout the Kalamazoo Wings (21-11-4-0) 3-0 in front of 5,029 at North Charleston Coliseum Friday night. Stingrays goaltender Shane Connelly stopped all 39 Wings shots and forwards Darren Reid, Jake Hauswirth and Rob Ricci each netted goals in the victory.
Box Score
Both sides skated a scoreless first period, but it was the Wings that controlled the momentum firing 15 shots on Connelly. Wings goaltender Jeremy Duchesne pushed aside nine Stingrays chances in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Duchesne continued to deny the Stingrays in the opening minutes of the second period and came up big for the Wings at 12:50 stopping a penalty shot against Stingrays rookie Trevor Bruess. With Stingrays forward Nikita Kashirsky in the penalty box for slashing, Bruess intercepted a pass along his own blue line and broke in shorthanded on Duchesne. Kalamazoo defenseman Jon Landry caught up to Bruess between the Wings' faceoff circles pulling him down in an attempt to knock the puck away resulting in the penalty shot.
The Stingrays continued to pressure and broke the scoreless tie on the power play at 18:04 as Reid deflected a shot from defenseman Zach Tarkir under left arm of Duchesne to give the Rays a 1-0 lead heading into the second intermission. Center Gregg Johnson recorded the second assist on Reid's first goal of the season.
Hauswirth gave the Stingrays a two-goal lead at 5:35 of the third period from Keith Johnson. The rookie forward controlled a bouncing feed from Johnson and snapped a wrist shot low-blocker side from the top of the right-wing circle for his seventh goal of the season. Ricci iced the game for the Stingrays at 19:59 with an unassisted empty-net goal. Duchesne finished the night stopping 32 of 34 Stingrays shots. The Stingrays ended the contest 1-for-3 on the power play while the Wings went 0-for-3.
