Caruana Returned On Loan From Portland

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that forward Matt Caruana has been returned on loan from the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League. The 24-year-old Orono, Ontario native signed a professional tryout contract with the Pirates on November 19th. He appeared in 20 games with Portland, registering two goals and two assists with a +2 plus-minus rating and six penalty minutes. Caruana last appeared in the AHL last season when he played in 41 games with the Iowa Chops, recording five goals and six assists.

Prior to his call-up, Caruana had six goals and two assists for eight points through 11 games with the Gladiators this season.

Caruana made is professional debut with the Pirates, appearing in five games and registering one assist, at the end of the 2007-08 season, following his senior year at Niagara University, where he skated four collegiate seasons. Prior to skating at Niagara, the 6'0" 175-pound forward played three junior seasons with the Bowmanville Eagles of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League from 2001-2004.

The Gladiators continue their 7th season in the ECHL on Saturday, January 16th vs. Charlotte at 7:05 p.m. The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
