Grizzlies and Stars Swap Goaltenders

WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH - The Utah Grizzlies National Hockey League affiliate, the Dallas Stars, announced today that they have assigned goaltender Ron Tugnutt to the Grizzlies after he cleared waivers earlier this morning. The Stars have also re-called goaltender Mike Smith from the Grizzlies.

Tugnutt ,36, has played five games with the Stars this season posting a 1-3-0 record with a 2.57 goals against average. The Scarborough, Ontario native is a veteran of 531 NHL games posting a 184-235-62 record with a 3.06 goals against average.

Last year with Dallas, Tugnutt went 15-10-5 with a 2.47 goals against average and four shutouts. Tugnutt has twice been named an NHL All-Star and during the 1998-99 season started the All-Star Classic while a member of the Ottawa Senators.

Tugnutt's best season came while a member of the Senators during the 1998-99 campaign when he went 22-10-8 with a 1.79 goals against average, the lowest since Phil Esposito's 1.77 average during the 1971-72 campaign.

Smith, 21, is 7-9-0 with Utah this season with a 2.86 goals against average, a.909 save percentage and one shutout. The Kingston, Ontario native was named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 7th when he went 3-0 with a 0.67 goals against average and a .975 save percentage over that week.

The 6-4, 210-pound netminder was originally a fifth round selection (161st overall) of the Stars in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Tugnutt will join the Grizzlies in time for their game tonight in Chicago versus the Wolves. Face-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM (mst). Smith will join the Stars in time for their game in Dallas on Thursday night versus Atlanta.
