Maple Leafs Recall Wellwood from St. John's

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that they have recalled forward Kyle Wellwood from the St. John's Maple Leafs of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Wellwood, 20, has played 37 games for St. John's this season collecting 30 points (seven goals, 23 assists) with six penalty minutes. He ranks third in the AHL in assists and ninth in points. He also ranks first among AHL rookies in the same two categories. Wellwood was named the November AHL Rookie of the Month and today was selected to the Canadian All-Star team for the upcoming 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic. In addition, he leads St. John's in assists and points.

The native of Windsor, Ontario played two NHL preseason games for Toronto at the start of the campaign and was held pointless with two penalty minutes. He was Toronto's sixth choice, 134th overall in the 2001 Entry Draft.
