Murphy, Upshall named All-Stars

Milwaukee Admirals right wing Scottie Upshall and defenseman Curtis Murphy were selected today as members of the American Hockey League (AHL) Canadian All-Star Team for the 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star game. Murphy, a native of Kerrobert, Sask., has notched 20 points (5g-15a), 29 penalty minutes, and a +11 rating in 32 games played thus far this year. His 15 assists leads the team, while his 20 points are tied for third on the Milwaukee roster and rank first among blueliners. In addition, his 104 shots on goal are tops among Admiral defenseman.

Making his third straight AHL All-Star appearance, Murphy was signed by the Nashville Predators after the 2002-03 season. The 5-8, 185-pounder won the IHL Turner Cup in 2000-01 with the Orlando Solar Bears and captured the AHL Calder Cup last season with the Houston Aeros. Murphy is also the reigning Eddie Shore winner, given to the top defenseman in the AHL each year.

Upshall, one of eight rookies to be named to the team, posted 16 points (8g-8a) in 19 games for the Admirals before being recalled by Nashville on December 17. With the Predators, the Ft. McMurray, Alta. native picked up an assist in seven games before suffering a knee injury and being placed on the injured list.

The Predators first round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry draft, Upshall averaged more than a point a game in his junior career, finishing with 226 points (99g-127a) in just 173 contests with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League. He also participated in the 2002 CHL/NHL Top Prospects game. The all-star team, comprised of players born in Canada, includes 21 skaters and three goaltenders. AHL fans determined the starting lineup via on-line balloting at theahl.com, while a committee of AHL coaches selected the remainder of the roster. The Canadian All-Stars will take on the PlanetUSA team that includes of players from the United States and Europe.

The 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic gets underway on Sunday, February 8, with the AHL All-Star Skills Competition at 7:00 p.m. ET. The annual All-Star Game follows at 7:00 p.m. ET on Monday, February 9.
