Robinson Named to Canadian AHL All-Star Team

Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The American Hockey League on Wednesday announced that Grand Rapids Griffins forward Nathan Robinson has been selected to play for the Canadian AHL All-Star Team at the 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic, which will be held Feb. 8-9 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

Robinson becomes the second hometown player chosen to participate in the AHL All-Star Classic, following the Dec. 19 selection of Griffins defenseman Travis Richards as captain for the PlanetUSA AHL All-Stars. The complete roster for the PlanetUSA AHL All-Star team will be announced on Thursday.

The 22-year-old Robinson, who was selected to the team by a committee of AHL coaches, currently paces the Griffins with 13 goals, 25 points and five power play goals in 32 games, while tying for second with 12 assists and three game-winning goals.

A native of Scarborough, Ontario, Robinson has been a primary factor in the Griffins' standing as the top team in the AHL's West Division (20-12-4-0). He recorded a Griffins season-high eight-game point streak from Nov. 21-Dec. 17, concluding the run by notching his first professional hat trick in a 4-1 rout of San Antonio.

Robinson, who tallied nine goals in a nine-game stretch from Dec. 12-Jan. 2, made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings on Nov. 28 against the New York Islanders. He appeared in five games with the Red Wings, going scoreless while averaging six minutes of ice time, before returning to Grand Rapids on Dec. 9.

Not even halfway through his second season, Robinson has already obliterated the production of his 2002-03 rookie campaign, when he compiled just three goals and 17 points in 53 contests with the Griffins.

Undrafted despite a spectacular junior career with Belleville that saw him lead the Ontario Hockey League in scoring during the 2001-02 season (47-63-110 in 67 games), Robinson signed with the Red Wings as a free agent on Oct. 12, 2002.

To purchase tickets or obtain more information regarding the 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic, which consists of the All-Star Skills Competition on Sunday, Feb. 8 and the All-Star Game on Monday, Feb. 9, fans may call the Griffins office at (616) 774-4585 or (800) 2-HOCKEY, or visit griffinshockey.com/all-star.
