Gladiators Weekly Update

November 27, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release

A Career Night: Scott Mifsud had a career night for the Gladiators in Friday night's 6-5 shootout win over the South Carolina Stingrays. Mifsud collected a goal and 3 assists for 4 points setting a career high for points in a game. The second year pro out of Burlington, Ontario posted three assists twice (1/16, 3/24) last season for Gwinnett as he appeared in 71 regular season games for the Gladiators.

Lighting the Lamp: Colton Fretter continues to lead the Gladiators in goals scored as the rookie forward posted two goals in the Gladiators 8-2 win over Charlotte on Thursday night while adding a marker in Friday's 6-5 shootout win over the South Carolina Stingrays and posting an unassisted tally in Saturday's 5-2 win over Columbia. The Harrow, Ontario native now has 14 goals on the season and shares first in the ECHL in goals while ranking first among ECHL rookies in that category.

Breaking the Streak! The Gladiators won their first shootout in over a year. Gwinnett downed the South Carolina Stingrays 6-5 in a shootout on Friday night. Gwinnett used shootout goals by Bruce Mulherin and Scott Mifsud while Dave Caruso posted saves on 4 of South Carolina's five chances for the win. It was the Gladiators first win in a shootout since a 4-3 win at Charlotte on March 19, 2005. Rick Emmett had the deciding goal in the shootout for Gwinnett in the win over Charlotte two seasons ago.

Looking for Seven: Gladiators forward Brad Schell is now 7 goals shy of 50 in his Gladiators and ECHL career after posting his 6th goal of the season in Tuesday's 6-3 loss against Charlotte. Schell entered the season with 37 goals and now has 43 on the year as he has added six so far this season. The Scott, Saskatchewan native looks to become just the third Gladiator to accomplish the feat joining Chris Durno (52) and Jeff Campbell (60) with 50 or more goals in a Gladiators career.

Still in the Lead! Third year pro Brad Schell posted an assist for the Gladaitors in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Columbia Inferno. Schell continues to lead the ECHL in scoring as he has posted 6 goals and 23 assists to push his total to 29 points on the year. Schell's 22 assists is also tops in that category in the ECHL.

A Brick Wall: Rookie goaltender Dave Caruso set a new Gladiators team record for most saves in a game as the netminder from Roswell, Georgia turned aside 47 of South Carolina's 52 shots in last night's 6-5 shootout win. Gwinnett's previous high for most shots allowed was 45 during the Gladiators inaugural 2003-04 season in a 3-2 shootout loss at Roanoke and then matched last year in a 6-0 loss against Greenville on January 20th. Trevor Prior finished with 43 saves in the loss for Gwinnett during the 2003-04 season while Tarkki made 38 in the loss last year.

Heading North! The Gladiators embark on their first Northern road trip since relocating to Gwinnett from Mobile. In three seasons in Gwinnett, the Gladiators are 3-0-0 against North Division opponents during the regular season and defeated the Toledo Storm in five games to capture the American Conrference Championship last season. Gwinnett plays Dayton, Reading and Wheeling for the first time in team history.
