BATS GO FOR SERIES WIN AT HOME: The Bats go for their first series victory at Louisville Slugger Field this season with a Thursday rubber match against the Syracuse Mets. Louisville had its three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday in a 6-1 loss, with its five-game win streak against Syracuse also snapped. Right-hander Vladimir Gutierrez will try to get back on track for the Bats as they look to win their first three-game series at home since July-August 2018.
AGAINST SYRACUSE: Louisville is facing off against Syracuse Mets for the first time since the New York Mets' Triple-A affiliate moved to Syracuse. Yesterday's 6-1 Mets win snapped a 5-game winning streak Louisville had over Syracuse dating back to last season, their longest active win streak against an opponent going into play yesterday. Louisville still owns a 51-22 record against SYR at Louisville Slugger Field, a .699 winning percentage.
LAST HOME SERIES WIN: With a win tonight, Louisville would have its first home series win of 2019. LOU last won a home series on August 24-25 last season, winning both games of a 2-game set against Indianapolis. LOU last won a home series of 3+ games from July 30-August 1 last season, taking 2 of 3 from Toledo, in which they lost the opener in that series before winning the latter 2 games.
WITHOUT ME(TER): Despite the Bats owning a 2-1 record without International League home run leader Josh VanMeter, who had his contract selected by the Reds on Sunday, the team is without a home run in 3 games since his departure. Without VanMeter, the Bats are slugging .374 as a team, and have a .415 slugging percentage in games when VanMeter suited up.
HITTERS CAN'T REED HIM: Left-hander Cody Reed has had a dominant run out of the bullpen recently, tossing 8 straight scoreless appearances, 7 in a Louisville uniform and one with the Reds. For the Bats, he's walked 6 and struck out 20 in 15.0 innings of work, not allowing a run since April 17. His scoreless innings streak is at 11.2 innings total, 9.1 with LOU and a 2.1-inning scoreless app with CIN on May 4.
INTERNATIONA LEAGUE'S 500th HOMER: Last season, the International League had its 500th home run of the year hit on May 29. This season, the league's 500th homer of the year came last night, on May 8, exactly 3 weeks ahead of pace from last season. In 1,948 games of action in 2018, there were 1,555 home runs, 0.80 homers/game. Through 438 games this season, there have been 507 home runs, 1.16 homers/game.
I AM NOT A CROOK: Pinch-hitter Narciso Crook recorded his first career Triple-A hit, RBI and extra-base hit all in the same at-bat on Wednesday, knocking in Luis Gonzalez for the team's lone run of the game in the fifth inning. Crook has now reached base in each of his first 2 plate appearances, drawing a walk in his debut plate appearance with the Bats in the series opener on Tuesday.
MISSING MULTI: Louisville as an offense only mustered up 4 hits in Wednesday's loss, with none of its hitters registering multiple hits. In 9 games where LOU does not have a player register a multi-hit game, the Bats are 1-8. Their lone win without a multi-hit game came on April 13, a 3-2 home win over the Gwinnett Stripers.
THAT WAS FAST: Tuesday evening's series opener was played in 1 hour and 59 minutes, the shortest nine-inning game the Bats have played in since August 9, 2016 in a 2-0 loss at Charlotte, which was also 1:59. It was the shortest nine-inning game at Louisville Slugger Field since May 16 of that same season, winning 4-1 over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with a time of 1:59.
