Syracuse Mets News Release
Louisville, KY - The Syracuse Mets came from behind twice and then held off a late Louisville rally as the Mets beat the Bats, 6-5, on Thursday night at Louisville Slugger Field. Rajai Davis had three hits, including a two-run double in the seventh inning that gave Syracuse its first lead of the game.
Louisville (14-20) started the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Brian O'Grady singled to right field, stole second base, and then scored on a Phillip Ervin single to right to give the Bats a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse (19-14) quickly answered in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Rymer Liriano hit a solo home run to left-center field to tie the game, 1-1. The homer was Liriano's first of the season.
The Bats took the lead back just a half-inning later in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Longhi singled, and Juan Graterol doubled to put runners on second and third base. Two batters later, Louisville pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez helped his own cause with a single up the middle to bring Longhi in from third for a 2-1 edge.
The Mets would break the game open, starting in the top of the seventh as Syracuse scored the game's next five runs between the seventh and eighth innings. David Thompson doubled to start the seventh, and Liriano walked. After a popout, Danny Espinosa pinch hit and grounded out to first, which allowed Thompson to score from third, tying the game, 2-2. Gregor Blanco then singled and stole second base. With runners on second and third, Davis doubled to left field to score both runners and give the Mets their first lead at 4-2.
In the eighth, former Bats player Dilson Herrera led off with a double and scored on a Thompson single to right field for a 5-2 advantage. Three batters later, Tim Tebow hit a pinch-hit double off the center-field wall to drive in Thompson and extend the Syracuse lead to four, 6-2.
The Bats would mount a rally in the ninth. Luis Gonzalez and Christian Colon both singled, and O'Grady walked to load the bases. Ervin followed with a two-run single to center field that scored Gonzalez and Colon and cut the Mets advantage to two, 6-4. After a strikeout, the Bats pulled off a double steal to put runners on second and third. Still with only one out, Longhi hit an infield single, scoring O'Grady to bring Louisville within one, 6-5. Syracuse reliever Arquimedes Caminero then got Graterol to ground into a double play to seal the win for the Mets.
Syracuse now travels to Columbus and begins a three-game series against the Clippers on Friday night. RHP Zach Lee is schedule to pitch for the Mets while RHP Shao-Ching Chiang will throw for the Clippers. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
