Wednesday Recap: The Cincinnati Cyclones (6-2-0-1) earned a 3-1 win over the Fort Wayne Komets on Wednesday night. Forwards Joe Pendenza, Nick Huard, and Eric Robinson scored the goals for the Cyclones, who are now in first place in the Midwest Division. Goaltender Brad Thiessen stopped 34 of the 35 shots he faced to collect his fifth win of the season. The Cyclones were outshot, 35-30, on the night, while the power play converted on its only opportunity.
Tuesday Morning Recap: The Cincinnati Cyclones (5-2-0-1) fell to the Wheeling Nailers, 7-5, on Tuesday morning. Forwards Zach Budish, Joe Wilson, Jaynen Rissling and Nick Huard, and defenseman Cody Carlson scored the goals for the Cyclones, who, at one time, led Wheeling, 5-2, late in the third. The Cyclones were outshot, 40-26, while the power play converted on one-of-five opportunities.
Saturday Recap: The Cincinnati Cyclones (5-1-0-1) took down the Evansville IceMen, 2-1, on Saturday night. Defensemen Garrett Noonan and Steve Weinstein scored the goals for the Cyclones, who win their third game of the last four played. The Cyclones outshot Evansville on the night, 27-26, while the power play was held scoreless on both opportunities. Goaltender Brandon Whitney earned his first professional win, stopping 25 shots on the night.
Previewing Quad City: The Mallards are currently sitting in a tie for first in the Midwest Division with the Cyclones, with 13 points. Quad City has won two of their last three, however dropped four straight prior to that. They are coming off of a 7-4 win over Alaska on Wednesday, in a game that saw forwards Matt Neal, Zach Pochiro, and Raphael Bussieres each record a pair of goals. The Mallards have been solid all season long offensively, being led by forward Oliver Archambault (4g, 9a). He is followed by five 10-point scorers, including Bussieres and Neal, who each have six goals and four assists.
Inside the Series: This is the first of 11 meetings between the Cyclones and Mallards this season. Cincinnati won both matchups last season, which were also the only two all-time meetings between the two sides.
Next Game Preview: The Cyclones head for Kalamazoo to take on the Wings on Saturday night. Cincinnati won the first meeting of the season back on October 24, however dropped a 3-1 decision on October 30, in Kalamazoo.
QUICK HITTERS
Racking up the Points: Forwards Joe Pendenza and Nick Huard have been key contributors to the offense in recent games. Pendenza has recorded points in two straight, and has scored five of his six points (3g, 2a) over the last four games. Huard has goals in each of his last two games, and points in each three games played (2g, 1a). He is also tied for sixth in League rookie scoring with eight points (3g, 5a).
That Escalated Quickly: In the Cyclones' 7-5 loss to the Wheeling Nailers on Tuesday, Cincinnati allowed five goals in 4:16; marking the fastest five goals allowed in team history. The previous record was 9:39 back in 2008, also against Wheeling.
The Puck Stops Here: Goaltender Brad Thiessen is amongst the ECHL's goaltending leaders through his first six starts of the season, posting a 5-1-0-1 record, and ranking in the top 10 amongst ECHL goalies in both goals against average (1.84), and save percentage (.940). He has allowed only one goal in five of his seven starts.
O From the D: Cincinnati's defensive corps have been finding the scoresheet early and often through the first nine games of the season. Cyclones defenseman Cody Carlson notched his first goal of the season in Tuesday's 7-5 loss to the Wheeling Nailers, and added an assist in Tuesday's 3-1 win over Fort Wayne. Garrett Noonan and Steve Weinstein scored both goals in Saturday's 2-1 win over Evansville, while Noonan also had an assist in last Friday's 4-2 win over Adirondack. Noonan leads the team in defenseman scoring with three goals and three assists on the young season. Overall, the Cincinnati blueline has been responsible for seven goals and 10 assists through the first nine games of the season.
Power Supply: For the third time in two weeks, Cincinnati's power play converted twice in a game, going 2-for-4 in last Friday's 4-2 win over Adirondack. The Cyclones also added one in Tuesday's loss to Wheeling, and scored again in Wednesday's win over Ft. Wayne. After finishing last season with the 25th power play in the ECHL, Cincinnati is now fourth in the League, converting on 25.8% (9-of-31) of man-advantage opportunities.
Playing Stingy: The Cyclones are currently fourth in the ECHL with 2.11 goals allowed per game. Cincinnati has let in 19 goals this season, which is tied for third lowest in the ECHL, and have only allowed two or more goals on three occasions (10/30- KAL- L, 3-1...11/6- ADK- W, 4-2...11/10- WHL- L, 7-5).
Throwback Night: Friday night's game against the Quad City Mallards is the annual Throwback Night at U.S. Bank Arena. The Cyclones will be throwing back the prices with $10 tickets, and $1 hot dogs, soda, pizza and beers. Friday is also Teddy Bear Toss Night. Fans are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to throw onto the ice after the Cyclones score their first goal. The stuffed animals will then be donated to the Cincinnati Police Department to distribute to young victims of crimes, accidents and fires in Cincinnati.
