Oilers Fall Short against Americans in Combative Contest on Military Night
November 13, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release
TULSA, OK - A late third period surge from the Tulsa Oilers proved to be insufficient on Friday night in a 3-2 loss to the Allen Americans. Defenseman Eric Roy netted the game-winning goal with less than four minutes remaining in regulation to give the visitors a victory in front of 5,750 on Budweiser Military Night at the BOK Center.
Allen forward Vincent Arseneau, recently sent down from the San Jose Barracudas of the AHL, showed a combination of muscle and hustle to create the first goal of the game. Arseneau blocked the shot of Oilers' defenseman Tom Kroshus and looked to be off to the races before stumbling in the Tulsa zone. The 23-year old winger somehow recovered his balance and the puck before dropping a pass to David Makowski who smacked a shot through Oilers' goalie Kevin Carr for a 1-0 Americans' lead.
Just after the midway point of the second period, the Americans pulled out front 2-0 on a strike from Casey Pierro-Zabotel. With Tulsa forward Brian Nugent seemingly injured in his own zone but no stoppage of play from the referee, Allen took advantage of the extra time and space. Chad Costello slipped a pass through the slot to Pierro-Zabotel who notched his fifth goal of the season from point blank range. Immediately following the goal, Nugent went after Makowski and a brawl developed just inside the Tulsa blue line. Nugent and Makowski were given fighting majors while Oilers' center Kyle Bochek and Americans' forward Ian Schultz were each assessed double-minors for roughing. Shortly after serving his penalty time, Bochek pounced on a loose puck in the Allen zone and slotted a snap shot underneath the crossbar at 16:05 to put the Oilers on the board.
The Americans' 2-1 lead held until the Oilers were awarded a power play at 13:47 of third period thanks to a slashing call against Schultz. Defenseman Tom Kroshus ripped a slap shot from the top of the right face off circle and Bochek was parked in front of the net to deflect it past Allen goalie Joel Rumpel for his second tally of the evening. The Oilers rose up only to let down just 48 seconds after finding the equalizer. J.P. LaFontaine's pass off the right wing boards in Tulsa territory connected with a streaking Roy at 16:04 and the rookie beat Carr from the slot to restore the Americans' advantage. Roy found the net for the fourth consecutive game to help the Americans run their winning streak to four games.
Tulsa, 0-3-0-1 in its last four outings, dropped to 4-6-0-1 overall and has scored only five goals in its last four games. Bochek, who played in his fourth game of the season after starting the year on the 21-day IR, finished the tilt with two goals, a fight, and nine penalty minutes, and joined Phil Brewer as the only Oilers' players this season with multi-goal games.
The Oilers will take the rest of the weekend off and return to home ice on Friday, November 20 at 7:05 p.m. for the second meeting of the season against the Missouri Mavericks.
