ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Admirals won their first away matchup of the season against the Elmira Jackals, 4-1, after securing a two-goal lead in the opening period Friday night at First Arena.

Early in the first period, the Admirals connected on a goal by Michael Pelech with help from recent addition Radoslav Illo and defenseman Joe Marciano. Illo's first assist and point in his North American professional hockey career arrived at 3:19 of the opening frame.

Later in the first, Steven Whitney gathered the puck in the right corner of the Jackals' zone before sending it back up top to Charles-Olivier Roussel at the right point. Roussel's slap shot glanced off the stick of Tommy Mele on its way to the net and past Elmira netminder C.J. Motte for a 2-0 lead at 11:16.

After a goalless second period, the Admirals widened their lead when newly acquired defensemen Samuel Noreau pushed the puck over to Gabriel Verpaelst, who squared off at the right point for a shot pass back across the zone to Alexandre Ranger. Ranger settled the pass and unloaded it through the pipes at 1:40 in the third, putting Norfolk up by three over a scoreless Elmira.

At 12:32 in the third, Steven Whitney threw one in with a wrister from the left wing to end a two-on-one rush, inching the score up 4-0 over the Jackals. Elmira immediately responded with their first goal of the night on a rebound put-back from forward Tyler Currier at 13:19, which settled the final score 4-1.

Nic Riopel and Ty Rimmer combined for Norfolk to save 36 of 37 attempts on net. Rimmer replaced Riopel in the third period after Riopel left with an injury. Elmira's C.J. Motte managed to keep out only 13 of the Admirals' 17 total shots. The Jackals went scoreless on six power plays, while Norfolk went 1-for-3.

The Admirals will head to Reading on Saturday night to face-off with the Royals for the first time this season. The puck drops at 7 p.m.

Three Stars:

1. NOR - Nic Riopel
