Wings Spoil Third Period Evansville Comeback
November 13, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - The Evansville IceMen overcame a 2-0 deficit on the road heading into the third for the second time this season Friday, but saw the comeback effort spoiled in a 4-2 loss to the Kalamazoo Wings at the Wings Event Center.
The IceMen outshot Kalamazoo 14-7 in the opening period, as newcomer Alex Guptill generated a few good quality scoring chances to lead the way. Evansville's best chance came on a breakaway set-up by Michael Trebish, who head-manned a pass that sprung Daultan Leveille free. Leveille tried to beat Wings goalie Joel Martin with a backhander through the five-hole, but was turned away, and the teams entered the first break scoreless.
Kalamazoo scored the game's first goal 1:34 into the second period when Lane Scheidl fed a pass out front from behind the net for Tyler Shattock, who deflected the puck past IceMen goalie Christoffer Bengtsberg. The Wings struck again after killing off a major penalty, when Tanner Sorenson hopped out of the box and beat Bengtsberg on a wraparound.
Tyson Fawcett put Evansville on the board 2:29 into the third period, when he capitalized on a broken play by burying a loose puck that trickled through the crease to him on the backdoor. The IceMen then tied the game at 2-2 on a power-play just over two minutes later when Chris Rumble blasted a shot past Martin from the point after a Nathan Moon shot clanked off the post seconds earlier.
But Kalamazoo answered right back while the teams skated 4-on-4 shortly after Rumble's goal. Dane Fox split the Evansville defense right through the slot and ripped a wrist shot past Bengtsberg to give the Wings a 3-2 advantage. Alexandre Mallet added an empty-net goal in the final minute to seal the 4-2 victory. Martin made 33 saves for his fifth win, while Bengtsberg stopped 26 in the loss.
Evansville travels to Wheeling overnight and will face the Nailers at 7:35pm EDT Saturday at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, WV. The IceMen and Nailers then play a Sunday afternoon tilt at 4:05 EDT to wrap up the weekend. Both games will be broadcast on ECHL.TV and www.evansvilleicemen.com, with coverage starting 15 minutes prior to game time.
