ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians looked destined to finish out a comeback victory after erasing three deficits and scoring four in the eighth to take a 6-5 advantage, but the Mud Hens rallied with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to bring across two runs and walk it off, 7-6. Spencer Torkleson put the Mud Hens up early with a solo home run in the first inning. The Indians evened the score in the third, courtesy of an RBI double by Tucupita Marcano that was grounded down the line and took a fortunate bounce off first base and into the outfield. Derek Hill homered for Toledo to regain the lead in the fifth, before it was quicky erased by an RBI triple by Travis Swaggerty. Toledo earned their largest lead of the contest after scoring three in the seventh - highlighted by a two-run double by Josh Lester. Down three runs, a Hoy Park walk and Rodolfo Castro double set up a two-run double by Swaggerty to put the the Indians within one. Now facing a 5-4 deficit, with two outs and runners on the corners, Mason Martin lifted a ball deep into the night sky that was lost by left fielder Kerry Carpenter and plated the tying and go-ahead runs. The Mud Hens were down to their final out in the ninth when Torkleson drew a walk and a misplayed fly ball to Swaggerty extended the inning to bring Brendon Davis to the plate. Davis ripped the first pitch he saw into the right-center gap to walk off the Indians, 7-6.
WHEN YOU'RE HOT, YOU'RE HOT: Tucupita Marcano doubled last night to extend his hitting streak to seven games. He has a hit in 10 of 11 games - three multi-hit games - with Indianapolis since being optioned by Pittsburgh on July 5. He has shined as Indy's leadoff hitter, reaching base safely in all 11 games and has reached 21 times (14 hits, 7 walks) in 52 plate appearances, good for a .404 on-base percentage. Marcano has walked seven times compared to eight strikeouts, putting the ball in play over 80-percent of the time.
CASTRO RAKES: Rodolfo Castro continued raking last night as he went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Yesterday was his fourth multi-hit performance in his last seven games and his sixth this month. He has hits in six of his last seven games and is hitting .345 (10-for-29) with two home runs, one double and four RBI during that span. Castro is now hitting .282 (20-for-71) in 18 games in July with a team-leading four home runs, three doubles, eight RBI and 10 runs scored.
TRIPLES GALORE: Travis Swaggerty's triple last night was Indians 30th of the season, which is the first time they've done so since 2018, when the team finished with 30. The Indians lead the International League in triples and have three players ranked among league leaders with Travis Swaggerty (7, T-1st), Mason Martin (5, T-7th) and Ji-Hwan Bae (4, T-9th).
NOE STOPPING HIM: Noe Toribio has solidified himself in a middle-relief role, in his last four appearances he is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA (2er/12.0ip) and a 0.58 WHIP. After not striking out a batter while walking seven in his first 5.0 innings over his first four appearances with Indy, he has 11 strikeouts with only two free passes in his last 12.0 innings. His splits from his first four outings compared to his last four are listed below:
First four: 9.00 ERA (5er/5.0ip), 5 H, 7 BB, O K, 2.40 WHIP, .313 AVG
Last four: 1.50 ERA (2er/12.0ip), 5 H, 2 BB, 11 K, 0.58 WHIP, .128 AVG
LOCKDOWN LEFTIES: The lefty dominance continued last night with Cam Alldred and Zach Matson each tossing a scoreless inning. Since 6/22, Cam Vieaux, Alldred, Eric Stout and Joe Jacques are a combined 4-1 with a 1.45 ERA. Add in Matson, who has made five starts in his last 10 appearances, and the collective ERA since 6/22 drops to 1.43 (8er/50.2ip), including Matson's starts. In comparison, 12 right-handed relievers (no starts included) are 3-5 with a 6.39 ERA (54er/76.0ip) in that time span. Vieaux improved to 4-0 on the season Tuesday night with a scoreless sixth inning. Since April 26, the southpaw is 4-0 with a 1.61 ERA (5er/28.0ip), 0.68 WHIP and .120 average against (11-for-92) to lead a group of left-handers who have been dominant for the Indians as of late.
TONIGHT: The Indians will look to end a two-game skid against the Mud Hens and even the series today at 7:05 PM ET at Fifth Third Field. The two squads are meeting for the second time this season and the first time at Toledo. The teams first met this season at Victory Field on May 17-22, and the Indians took the series victory with wins in four of the six contests. Tonight, Miguel Yajure will take the mound for Indianapolis for his second start against the Mud Hens. His lone start against Toledo came on 8/19/21, he tossed 4.0 one-run innings with six strikeouts. Countering for Toledo is RHP Elvin Rodriguez, who is 4-2 with a 4.03 ERA (23er/51.1ip) and 44 strikeouts. Rodriguez has never faced the Indians.
THIS DAY IN 2018: Indians right-handers Damien Magnifico and Jesus Liranzo combined for a 7.0-inning one-hitter while playing as the away team in Game 2 of a doubleheader against Buffalo at Victory Field. Each team was held to just one hit through six scoreless frames before back-to-back RBI singles by Erich Weiss and Kevin Newman put Indianapolis on the board in the top of the seventh. It was the Indians' ninth one-hitter in Victory Field history and fourth at home, despite being designated as the away team.
