Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ROCHESTER, NY -The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (49-48) swept a doubleheader over the Rochester Red Wings 8-6 and 10-9 on Friday. For the first time since the seven game mark of the season (4-3), the RailRiders have a winning record.
The resumption of the first game began with a 2-1 Rochester advantage in the bottom of the third. The Red Wings immediately got on the board again with a three-spot in the inning, capped by a Riley Adams solo home run. Rochester would make it a 6-1 game thanks to a run in the seventh.
The RailRiders exploded offensively in the eighth inning for their biggest inning of the season. Oswald Peraza, Jake Bauers, Tyler Wade and Rob Brantly all drove in runs in the frame. SWB sent eleven to the plate, scoring seven times, their largest output in any one inning this season. They took an 8-6 lead to an eventual game one victory.
Emmanuel Ramirez (1-0) tallied his first RailRiders win. Mason Thompson (0-1) was handed the loss. Greg Weissert pushed his now 16-game scoreless streak to 16.2 innings and chalked up his 12th save. With the win, SWB moved to a .500 record (48-48) for the first time since they were 4-4 on April 14.
In game two, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped ahead first. Miguel Andújar ripped an RBI double in the top of the first inning. It would be the start of a stellar offensive performance with two doubles, a homer and four RBI. The RailRiders plated four runs in the third thanks to his two-run blast followed by a Phillip Evans solo home run for back-to-back long balls in the inning.
The RailRiders would give starter Matt Krook a 6-0 lead before he surrendered a pair of solo blasts in the bottom of the fourth. SWB would respond immediately with another four-spot in their half of the fifth. Andújar, Evans, and Ronald Guzmán would rip three consecutive RBI doubles to take a 10-2 lead after a wild pitch.
The Red Wings brought the game within three by plating a lone run in the bottom of the fifth and four in the sixth against Krook and reliever Shane Greene. Leading 10-7, José Mujica took over in the last of the seventh in a seven-inning game. The righty surrendered a two-run home run to Jake Noll, his second home run of the game to make it a 10-9 SWB lead. Mujica would retire the next three in order to tally his first RailRiders save.
Krook (6-7) picked up the win with Rochester starter Josh Rogers (0-3) taking the loss. For the first time since April 13, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has a winning record. SWB will send Jhony Brito (4-2, 3.21) to the mound with a series victory already under the belt on Saturday at 7:05 PM. All the action can be heard on the RailRiders Baseball Network.
