Five-Game Home Point Streak Snapped by Beast

November 28, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- It's very rare to see a game with as many goals scored on special teams as there were on Saturday night, but that's exactly what the fans witnessed at WesBanco Arena. After a pair of even strength goals, each of the final seven markers of the evening were netted either on the power play or shorthanded. Unfortunately for the Wheeling Nailers, five of those tallies were recorded by the visiting Brampton Beast, who picked up a 6-3 victory, ending Wheeling's five-game home point streak.

The first period featured a plethora of goals, as the Nailers and Beast both found the back of the net twice. Wheeling picked up the first tally of the night, capitalizing on a turnover. Riley Brace raced in on the left side of the offensive zone, before centering a pass to Jarrett Burton, who blasted a one-timer into the top-right corner of the cage. Brampton pulled even 3:37 later. Mathew Maione's left point drive was stopped, but Luke Sandler whacked in the rebound at the right side of the crease. Later in the stanza, the Beast took the lead, when Travis Brown slapped in a Bryan McGregor feed for a shorthanded marker. 21 seconds after that, the score was tied, thanks to Zack Torquato, whose wrist shot from the blueline found its way into the net. Torquato's eighth goal in 12 games was assisted by Burton and Sahir Gill.

More scoring took place in the middle frame, but for Wheeling's sake, three of the four goals went the wrong way. The Beast regained their lead at the 3:10 mark, when Brandon Marino glided down the right side of the offensive zone, before connecting with Chris Auger for the power play redirection. Just under three minutes later, Brampton talled its second shorthanded goal of the night, as Luke Pither roofed a wrist shot on a 2-on-1 rush from the left circle. 36 seconds after that, the Nailers got a power play goal back. Connor Leen chopped a pass to Adam Krause, who gloved the puck down, then proceeded to lift a shot over Sean Bonar's glove. The Beast picked up one more goal in the second period, as Auger collected his second of the stanza, redirecting a Mike Vernace point shot, while playing with the man advantage.

Only one goal was scored in the third period, as Mike Vernace capped off the 6-3 Brampton win with a power play goal from the blueline.

Sean Bonar was the winning goaltender for the Beast, as he made 31 saves on 34 shots. Brian Foster took the loss for Wheeling, giving up six goals on 34 shots.

The Nailers will travel to Reading for a 4:00 game against the Royals on Sunday, before returning home for three games next weekend. Friday night, The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas present Flat Screen Friday, as Wheeling hosts South Carolina at 7:35 on a Frosty Friday. On Saturday, Star Wars takes center stage, with Star Wars characters in attendance, t-shirts to the first 2,000 fans, and specialty jerseys worn by the players, as the Nailers challenge the Stingrays at 7:35. Saturday is also Teddy Bear Toss Night. Finally, on Sunday, McDonald's $5 kids tickets will be available, and fans will be able to skate with the team following the 4:05 contest against Elmira.
