Indy's Road Woes Continue with Loss to Missouri

November 28, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Indy Fuel News Release

INDEPENDENCE, MO. - The Indy Fuel (9-7-1-0) had no cure for their current struggles away from home as they fell for the second night in a row to the Missouri Mavericks (16-2-0-1), by the final score of 4-2 Saturday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. A pair of rapid tallies by the Mavericks in the second period negated a strong start from the Fuel, who now drop to 0-4-0-0 on a five-game road trip that concludes tomorrow afternoon in Quad City.

Missouri scored twice in 38 seconds in the later stages of the middle frame to turn a 2-1 Indy lead on its head, setting up the ECHL-leading Mavericks up for their 11th-consecutive victory and their sixth-straight on home ice. Defenseman Chris Owens had his hands on both tallies, setting up Jesse Root for the equalizer at 15:03, before picking up a Tyler Barnes rebound for his first goal of the season at 15:41. Root's goal was his league-pacing 12th of the campaign and his second in two nights against Indy.

With the Fuel pressing to get even in the third period, Missouri made it 4-2 when Carter Verhaeghe beat goaltender Shane Owen off of the left post at 7:05. But Indy could not muster any offense outside of a pair of first-period tallies from rookie forward Cody Sharib en route to their fourth-straight defeat.

Sharib scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season just 1:07 apart to turn an early 1-0 hole into their first lead of the weekend in the first period. The 25-year-old converted a centering feed from Walker Wintoneak to tie the game at one at 7:12, and used his net-front presence to redirect a long-range shot from defenseman Kevin Quick at 9:05. Quick chipped in the secondary assist on the Fuel's first goal as well, giving the veteran his third multi-assist outing of the season.

Barnes opened the scoring for the hometown Mavericks only 3:39 into play, when a centering feed from behind the goal line caromed off of a defender's shin pad and behind an unsuspecting Owen.

The Fuel goaltender made his second start in as many nights and suffered his fifth loss of the season, stopping 19 of 23 Missouri shots. On the other end of the decision Josh Robinson rose to 10-0-0-1 on the season, making 21 saves.

Neither side found any success on the power play, with the Fuel going scoreless in two opportunities and the Mavericks going 0-for-3.

Indy will try to steer out of their road skid Sunday afternoon as they visit the Quad City Mallards in what is the final stop in the club's eight-day trip. The Mallards defeated the Fuel 2-1 at iWireless Center on Nov. 22 in the first game of the five-game swing away from Indiana Famers Coliseum. A four-game homestand awaits Indy after Sunday's matchup with Quad City, which is slated for a 5:05 p.m. ET start.
