Steelheads' late surge comes up short against Rush

Idaho Steelheads News Release

Rapid City, SD - Rob Linsmayer netted his fifth goal of the season midway through the third period but it wasn't enough, as the Rapid City Rush (9-6-1-1) topped the Idaho Steelheads (6-10-4-0), 2-1 at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The Steelheads outshot the Rush handily for the third straight meeting, 34-19, but Rush goaltender Marek Langhamer made 33 saves to earn his third victory of the season. Langhamer also earned the win in the first game of the series on Wednesday, when he made 45 saves. The Rush opened the scoring at 9:32 of the first period when the Steelheads turned the puck over in their own zone. A pass got caught in the feet of Carson McMillan at the right face-off dot in the Idaho zone, bouncing to Spencer Pommells who netted his fifth goal of the season. The Rush would capitalize on a power play at 4:37 of the second period when Cody Ferriero dangled his way in alone on Philippe Desrosiers and lifted the puck over Desrosiers' glove to make it 2-0. It was Ferriero's third power play goal of the series and also his third goal of the season. The Steelheads pressed for the tie in the third, outshooting Rapid City 11-4 in the final frame. They outshot the Rush 41-7 combined in the third period across the series. That's when Linsmayer finally broke through on Langhamer at 9:05 of the third. Jake Rutt threw a wrister on goal from the left point that Langhamer bobbled in the crease. Linsmayer found the loose puck and steered it around the outstretched goaltender to cut the deficit in half. The Steelheads had several prime opportunities to tie the game late in the third with the goaltender pulled, perhaps none better than when Brandon Magee slid a slick centering pass from the left wing boards onto the stick of Jefferson Dahl driving down the center lane. Dahl waltzed in on goal and lifted a shot over Langhamer's glove but just inches wide of the far post. The Steelheads finished 0-for-7 on the power play, including a lengthy 4-on-3 advantage late in the second period. That sequence featured a solid post-to-post save by Langhamer to rob Magee, as well as another prime chance for Dahl that missed the net. The Rush are now 5-0-2 in one-goal games this season. The Steelheads nine-game, 19-day road trip comes to an end, as the Steelheads will return home to host a three-game series with the Eastern Conference leading Florida Everblades at CenturyLink Arena. The series will start Wednesday night with puck-drop scheduled for 7:10pm MT. The game can be heard on 1350AM KTIK and seen on Cable One, Channel 72.
