Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The TinCaps fell to the South Bend Cubs, 8-7, in 11 innings in the opener of their three-game series at Four Winds Field on Tuesday night.
With two outs in the bottom of the 11th, South Bend's eight and nine hitters, Rafael Narea and Chris Singleton, hit back-to-back doubles to tie and win the game, respectively.
Fort Wayne (26-30) lost despite two-hit games from center fielder Jeisson Rosario, right fielder Tirso Ornelas, catcher Luis Campusano, DH Justin Lopez, shortstop Gabriel Arias, and first baseman Jalen Washington. The TinCaps out-hit the Cubs, 13-11, and out-walked them, 4-1.
South Bend (27-29) started the scoring in the home first with a two-out, three-run homer from third baseman Austin Filiere.
The TinCaps got a run back in the third as Rosario singled in Arias. The Cubs stretched their lead back to three, 4-1, with an unearned run in the fifth.
Mason Thompson started for the 'Caps and went the first five innings. Aaron Leasher come on for the next four. The lefty threw four shutout frames with eight strikeouts and only three baserunners allowed.
As Leasher rolled, Fort Wayne rallied at the plate with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to equalize, 4-4. Campusano homered in the seventh (his third of the year) to make it 4-2. Later in that frame, Lopez tripled and Arias brought him home with a single. In the eighth, with second baseman Esteury Ruiz at second, Ornelas delivered a game-tying single.
Thanks in part to the new rule in Minor League Baseball this year that has teams start extra innings with a runner at second, both sides scored twice in the 10th. South Bend was also aided by a pair of Fort Wayne errors in the 10th. Both sides committed three errors in the game. A Cubs blunder in the 11th allowed the TinCaps to go in front, 7-6, before the heroics of Narea and Singleton.
