Lansing Lugnuts News Release
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Colton Laws combined with two relievers on a six-hit shutout, leading the Lansing Lugnuts (38-21) past the Bowling Green Hot Rods (36-21), 2-0, on Wednesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
With victories in the first two games of the three-game series, the Lugnuts - the winningest team in Minor League Baseball - became the first Midwest League visiting team to win a series at Bowling Green. The Nuts also reduced their magic number for clinching a playoff spot to 5 and took a one-game lead over the Hot Rods atop the MWL Eastern Division.
Two key two-out swings drove in the game's only runs: a Chavez Young RBI single off Bowling Green starter Josh Fleming (Loss, 2-1) in the sixth inning, knocking in Matt Morgan, and a Norberto Obeso RBI single off reliever Jose Disla in the eighth inning, plating Reggie Pruitt.
The rest belonged to the Lugnuts' pitchers, and they upheld their end of the bargain.
Starter Laws (Win, 2-2) fired five scoreless frames, scattering three hits and striking out three.
Kyle Weatherly took care of the sixth and seventh innings, striking out two while pitching around a base hit and an HBP, before Claudio Custodio (Save, 1) nailed down the eighth and ninth innings, striking out one and allowing two singles.
Bowling Green's lineup hit 0-for-13 with a runner on base.
Neither team's pitching staff issued a walk in the game.
Right-hander Turner Larkins (3.72 ERA) goes to the mound on Thursday night in the series finale as the Lugnuts go for the sweep, opposed by Bowling Green right-hander Alex Valverde (4.06). First pitch is at 7:35 p.m.
The Lugnuts next return to Cooley Law School Stadium on Friday, June 15th, opening a three-game series against South Bend featuring Family Faith Night with LAFCU Fireworks on June 15th, Star Wars Night with LAFCU Fireworks on June 16th, and a Father's Day Delta Dental Kids Day with a special Jersey Giveaway on June 17th.
