Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars evened their three-game series with the Peoria Chiefs with a 7-1 win at Northwestern Medicine Field on Wednesday night.
The Cougars (30-27) scored in the bottom of the first inning. After three straight batters reached with two outs, Eduardo Diaz roped an RBI single to center to make it 2-0 Cougars. In the second inning, Jazz Chisholm added to the lead with a run-scoring single. In the fourth, Yan Sanchez's RBI knock in the third stretched the lead to 4-0.
In the fifth inning, two singles set the table for Scott Hurst to drive in Peoria's only run on a base hit. Leading 5-1 in the eighth, the Cougars tacked on two more runs. Yoel Yanqui's triple to center and Renae Martinez's single accounted for the two tallies.
Cougar starter Matt Peacock (3-2) went six innings and allowed one run on nine hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Matt Brill gave the Cougars two innings of scoreless relief. Erbert Gonzalez tossed a shutout ninth inning.
Jesus Cruz (0-1) took the loss for the Chiefs. Cruz hurled two innings, allowed four runs (one earned), walked one and struck out two. Alvaro Seijas pitched in five innings of relief, surrendering two runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out four. Fabian Blanco yielded the Cougars' two eighth inning runs.
The Cougars and Chiefs wrap up the three-game set on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. As part of "Thirsty Thursday", $1 select beers, small sodas and hot dogs are available to fans.
