Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons will be represented by two members of this year's team in the 2018 Midwest League All-Star Game at Cooley Law School Stadium in Lansing, Mich., on June 19. Infielder Jared Walker and pitcher Andre Scrubb were selected to the Eastern Division roster, with Walker as the starting third baseman.
Walker, 22, has featured in 43 of the Loons 56 games this season hitting .255 with seven home runs and 27 RBI. He's tied for fifth in the MWL in home runs, tied for fourth in doubles (13), tied for fifth in slugging percentage (.510) and tied for eighth in OPS (.873). The Powder Springs, Ga., native is in his second full season with Great Lakes and will be the first non-pitching starter for the Loons since Kyle Farmer (catcher) and Joey Curletta (right field) both started in 2014.
Also in his second stint with the Loons this season, Scrubb is 3-0 with a 3.76 ERA in 16 relief appearances. He possesses an impressive 10.95 K/9 ratio with 32 strikeouts in 26.1 innings pitched. The 23-year-old right-hander from Woodbridge, Va., went 6-2 with a 1.74 ERA in 31 appearances last year.
In all, the Loons have now had 43 players selected to all-star teams since 2007, including seven in 2009 and 2010. Both Jerry Sands (2010) and O'Koyea Dickson (2012) were named the MVPs of their respective showcases. Other notable Loons all-stars from past years include:
Clayton Kershaw (2007) Kenley Jansen (2008) Dee Gordon (2009) Jerry Sands (2010) Carlos Frias (2013) Jharel Cotton (2013) Grant Holmes (2015) Dennis Santana (2016)
The festivities for this year's all-star game will be held in Lansing on June 19 beginning at 3 p.m. with a pregame block party. Gates to the stadium will open at 3:30 p.m. for team autograph sessions. The Home Run Derby will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by the game at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at lansinglugnuts.com.
