South Bend Cubs News Release

South Bend, IN: For the first time as a Chicago Cubs affiliate, the South Bend Cubs have pulled off a no-hitter.

Tonight, courtesy of a masterful performance combined from starter Rollie Lacy and reliever Ben Hecht, the South Bend franchise has its first no-hitter since the year 2014. South Bend whitewashed the TinCaps 7-0.

The Cubs had a great offensive night on Wednesday, but that was overshadowed by the dominance of the pitching. Lacy had his best start in a South Bend uniform to date after he threw seven scoreless no-hit innings paired with six strikeouts. Lacy allowed just three base runners total throughout the night.

As the pitch count continued to rise for the Creighton alum, Manager Jimmy Gonzalez squeezed everything he could out of his starter. After seven innings and 96 pitches, it was the bullpen's turn.

Hecht had been throwing in the bullpen since the sixth inning. After Lacy was able to work out of the seventh, Hecht needed just 25 pitches to put away Fort Wayne. However, it did not come easy.

With a quick 8th inning, Hecht slowly trotted back to the mound in search of the final three outs. Second baseman Esteury Ruiz hit the hardest ball of the inning. A line drive that looked like trouble sailed into center field. The reliable and speedy Zach Davis made the catch on the run.

With two outs, Tirso Ornelas stepped up to the plate.

The at-bat was a good start for Hecht, who in three pitches put two strikes on the scoreboard. But after a couple foul balls and pitches out of the zone, Hecht faced a 3-2 count. With a deep breath, Hecht fired a breaking ball into the mitt of catcher Miguel Amaya. Home plate umpire Alex Nash called it strike three.

In a matter of seconds, the celebration was underway. Gatorade showers and a mob just beside the mound awaited the two right-handers. Lacy earned his second win of the season in the no-hitter.

Leading the way on the offensive side was left fielder Jared Young. With a three hit performance, Young drove in four of the Cubs seven runs. His RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the first inning scoring Jhonny Bethencourt was the game winning hit.

With the victory, South Bend improves their record to just one game under .500 at 28-29. Tonight's win marks the fourth straight series win for the Cubs. A win tomorrow would not only give them the sweep, but would also set their record back at an even .500. Left hander Ricky Tyler Thomas is scheduled to take the hill for South Bend in his first start off the disabled list.
