Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Bryce Conley nearly pitched a complete game Wednesday while picking up the victory for the Beloit Snappers in a 3-0 two-hit shutout against the Cedar Rapids Kernels in game two of a doubleheader sweep at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Beloit improved to 28-30 overall, and Cedar Rapids fell to 27-31.
Conley (3-2) registered a personal-best 10 strikeouts over a career-high 6.2 innings pitched. He did not allow any Kernels to advance past second base and limited Cedar Rapids to a pair of singles during his longest career outing. Joshua Reagan finished the contest for Conley by inducing a groundout from former South Carolina teammate Jordan Gore in the seventh inning.
Beloit picked up all of the offense it would need during the first inning. Mickey McDonald drew a leadoff walk from Tanner Kiest (0-1) and moved up on a double from Trace Loehr. Hunter Hargrove and Logan Farrar followed by hitting back-to-back RBI singles to secure a 2-0 Snappers advantage. Kiest only pitched in the first inning of Wednesday's nightcap and took his first Kernels loss.
Randy Dobnak replaced Kiest in the second and delivered a strong outing in long relief. He induced an inning-ending double play in his first frame that kept a run off the scoreboard and added perfect work in three of the next four innings.
The Snappers tallied an insurance run within the seventh to reach their winning margin of 3-0. Nick Allen opened the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second base by McDonald. Loehr drove in Allen with an RBI single, but that was the only run that Dobnak allowed over six quality innings out of the bullpen.
This five-game, three-day homestand will wrap up Thursday at 6:35 p.m. with Kernels right-hander Bailey Ober (1-1, 7.86) expected to start against Snappers southpaw Ivan Andueza (0-2, 5.76). Fans unable to attend the contest can follow the broadcast on 1450 KMRY AM and 93.1 KMRY FM and also online at www.kmryradio.com, www.kernels.com, and MiLB.TV.
Fireworks are scheduled to take place after Thursday's tilt. Princess Night includes a free tiara for the first 1,000 fans through the gates along with visits from Cinderella, Moana, Rapunzel, and Alice. Especially For You Night features pink Kernels jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game to benefit the Especially for You Race this October. EFY will also hand out 500 pink inflatable bats at the main gates. It is also First Federal Credit Union Flat Screen Thursday, 94.1 KRNA Thirsty Thursday, and College Night.
