Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Worcester, MA - The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (35-35) had the final laugh in a back-and-forth contest, scoring five unanswered to claim a 7-3 victory over the Worcester Red Sox (37-35) on Thursday night at Polar Park.
After a scoreless first two innings, the IronPigs struck first in the top of the third. With two outs Jake Cave doubled and Drew Ellis followed with a two-run homer, his seventh of the season, to put the IronPigs up 2-0.
Worcester answered with two in the last of the third to tie it. Back-to-back two-out singles put runners at the corners before a third straight single from Wilyer Abrea brought in a run. A throwing error on a subsequent stolen base then allowed another run to score to tie the game.
The WooSox struck again with two outs in the fifth to take the lead. Marcus Wilson singled before Niko Goodrum doubled him home to give the WooSox their first lead of the night.
In the sixth, the IronPigs tied the game on a Darick Hall RBI double before Esteban Quiroz walloped his fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot, to give the IronPigs the lead in the seventh for good. Simon Muzziotti ripped a two-run single later in the inning for insurance runs, putting the IronPigs ahead 7-3.
Connor Brogdon (1-1) spearheaded a spotless bullpen effort for the IronPigs, tossing two perfect innings, striking out two.
Taylor Broadway (1-1) suffered the loss for the WooSox, allowing four runs on a hit and four walks, striking out two in two-thirds of an inning.
The IronPigs and WooSox continue their series on Friday, June 23, at 6:45 p.m. at Polar Park.
