PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Lowell Devils allowed a season-high seven goals in falling to the Providence Bruins, 7-1, on Friday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Matt Hendricks registered two goals and an assist, while Aaron Slattengren added two markers to lead the Providence offense.
The Bruins dominated this contest from the get-go, outshooting the Devils 18-3 in the first period and going up 3-0 heading into the first intermission. Slattengren converted on Providence's first two power plays to allow his team to jump quickly to a two goal lead and also gather his first goals in a Bruins uniform. The left wing pounced on the rebound from Brian Skinner's point shot at 5:41 and then redirected Jonathan Sigalet's wrister past Jordan Parise almost six minutes later. Matt Hendricks made it a three-goal Providence cushion 1:29 after Slattengren's second with a power! move toward the far post and a backhander through the five-hole.
Providence took a 4-0 lead at 2:38 of the second period on an abbreviated 5-on-4 advantage. Alexandre Imbeault sent a centering pass onto the tape of Martins Karsums' stick for a quick one-timer that found the back of the net.
Hendricks scored the first of a trio of goals in the third for Providence at 3:46 as he was allowed to set up on the near circle to fire Jeff Hoggan's cross-ice feed into the top corner. The Bruins found themselves up 6-0 at 9:22 when Sean Curry completed a 2-on-1 rush with Chris Collins.
Benoit Mondou finally broke Tuukka Rask's shutout bid with 3:05 remaining in regulation after a scramble in front allowed the Devil forward to lift his sixth of the season into the top shelf. Hoggan completed the scoring and put Providence back up by six at 19:03 of the third.
The Bruins went 3-for-6 on the man-advantage, while Rask stopped 16-of-17 shots.
The Devils have a day off before visiting the Philadelphia Phantoms on Sunday, January 20 at 5:05 p.m. Lowell returns home on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:05 p.m. to battle the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Dollar Dawg Night.
