Cyclones Rally to Stun Wings in Shootout, 5-4
February 4, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Back-up goaltender Branden Komm was thrust into action late in the game and ended up stealing the show as he led the Cincinnati Cyclones (20-18-0-4) past the Kalamazoo Wings (19-16-1-3) by a 5-4 shootout final score in front of 2,007 at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday night.
The Cyclones broke the scoreless deadlock at the 7:06 mark when Stephan Vigier slid a puck to Josh Shalla across the crease, who tapped in his 16th of the season past Joel Martin (SOL, 41 saves, 14-9-1-2). Unfortunately, the Wings would answer back as Eric Kattelus finished an odd-man rush by tucking home his sixth goal of the season, and first of the season series, at 14:56 to knot things at one. Then, at 18:15, Gergo Nagy sniped in a power play goal from outside the right circle, beating Sam Brittain (ND, 11 saves, 11-10-0-1) through a screen to give his team a 2-1 edge heading into the first intermission.
Cincinnati pulled even just 3:38 into the middle stanza as Shayne Taker received a drop pass from MacKenzie Weegar and blasted in his second goal of the season, knotting things at two. The Wings would temporarily jump back ahead at 9:42 when former Cyclone Michael Neal directed in his eighth goal of the year after a perfect feed from Gergo Nagy. The Cyclones would respond again, though; at the 12:57 mark, Geoff Irwin crashed the net and stashed a rebound over Martin's shoulder to once again draw his team even, this time at three goals apiece.
Just 47 second into the third period, Kattelus rang a heavy shot off of Brittain's mask, sending the Cyclones netminder to the ice with an injury. As the puck bounced loose to the middle, Justin Taylor skated in and batted home the go-ahead strike, making it 4-3 Wings. With Brittain forced out of the game, the Cyclones turned to rookie goaltender Branden Komm (W, 7 saves, 1-0-0-0) to keep his team in the game. Meanwhile, Cincinnati continued to pepper shots on Martin as time wound down, but still could not find the net. That was until the 19:19 mark; David Pacan corralled a loose puck at the side of the net and punched it out to Joe Pendenza, who lifted in the game-tying lamplighter to force the contest into the extra session.
After five minutes of scoreless bonus hockey, the tilt was moved to a shootout, giving Komm another chance to steal the show - and he delivered. The Cyclones earned shootout goals from Frederick Gaudreau and Pendenza while Komm proceeded to blank each and every Kalamazoo Wings offering to earn his first professional win.
Cincinnati will now embark on a quick two-game road trip beginning this Friday in Elmira as they face the Jackals for the final time at 7:05pm. Fans can hear the action of the game on the Cyclones Radio Network beginning at 6:45pm and watch live at Game Time Sports Bar & Grill in Cheviot!
