Nailers Come Inches Away from Point in Reading

Wheeling Nailers News Release

READING, PA- In the first 42 games of the regular season, the Wheeling Nailers have gone to overtime only twice, missing out on extra hockey in unique ways. On Wednesday night, Wheeling fell behind the Reading Royals 2-0, before rallying back to within one, while outshooting Reading 28-9 over the final two periods. Despite Josh Archibald's third period goal, the Nailers suffered a 2-1 defeat at Santander Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Royals drew first blood at the 3:56 mark of the middle frame, doing so with a shorthanded tally. Morgan Ellis broke his stick on a one-timer, allowing Sean Wiles to spring Pat Mullane down the right side of the ice. Mullane hammered on the brakes when he reached the right circle, before using the defender as a screen, which allowed him to slip a wrist shot in along the ice. Later in the frame, Reading added to its advantage. Cam Reid dribbled a pass into the slot for Adam Hughesman, who redirected the puck on his backhand, squeezing a shot through Eric Hartzell's legs.

Wheeling attempted a comeback in the third period, drawing to within a goal at the eight-minute mark of the frame. The Nailers executed a face-off play with Riley Brace setting up Josh Archibald on the inner edge of the right circle. Archibald teed up a laser of a slap shot, firing it into the left side of the net. With under a minute to go, Wheeling thought it had tied the game, as a goal was originally signalled with 15.9 seconds left on the clock. However, after a conversation with the officials, the goal was disallowed, and the Nailers fell, 2-1.

Connor Knapp put up a stellar performance in goal for Reading, stopping 42 of the 43 shots he faced. Eric Hartzell suffered an unfortunate fate in the decision, taking the loss with 22 saves on 24 shots.

The Nailers will begin a three-game homestand on Friday night at 7:35 against the Toledo Walleye.
