Cyclones Continue Homestand

December 8, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

COMING UP: The Cincinnati Cyclones, the 2008 Kelly Cup champions, continue their seven game homestand with the middle contest of the string at U.S. Bank Arena. Tonight, Johnstown visits with one dollar Pulled Pork Sandwiches being the discounted food item. Tuesday (December 9), Charlotte comes in for a Big Beer Tuesday--with Labatt's beers being priced at two dollars for a 24 ounce beverage. Friday (December 12), Wheeling is in for Teddy Bear Toss Night--with the stuffed animals collected from the toss being turned over to the Shriners. Saturday (December 13), it is David Desharnais Bobblehead Night--as Charlotte makes its final stop in the Queen City this season. The Desharnais bobbleheads have the former Cyclone with the Kelly Cup, MVP and Rookie of the Year awards from 2007-08.

ABOUT SATURDAY NIGHT...: Defenseman T.J. McElroy's second goal of the night and fourth of the season with 27 seconds remaining forced overtime, but Randy Rowe's ninth of the campaign 3:34 into the extra frame gave Johnstown a 3-2 victory. Olivier Latendresse picked up a pair of assists and Martin Houle was solid in goal stopping 28 shots in the defeat.

ABOUT FRIDAY NIGHT...: Four fights, six misconduct penalties, 144 penalty minutes and a 3-1 Johnstown win over the Cyclones were the highlights. Barret Ehgoetz notched the lone Cincinnati goal of the evening--a power play effort, while Martin Houle stopped nine of ten shots while he was in the game. Midway through the second period was when the fireworks hit and three fights broke out on the ice simultaneously--including both starting goaltenders.

ABOUT WEDNESDAY NIGHT...: The Cyclones claimed a 3-1 decision from Dayton on Wednesday night. Olivier Latendresse scored a pair of goals, Kyle Rank netted a game winning shorthanded goal and Martin Houle stopped 22 shots in the triumph.

THAT'S A PACKAGE!: ‘The Ultimate Sports Fan Package' is currently on sale. This is a unique opportunity to get a ticket to any Cyclones game during the 2008-09 regular season, a ticket to the Harlem Globetrotters performance at the December 30 event at 1pm or 7pm, a Cyclones winter hat and a special Globetrotters wristband. The price is just $30 per ticket and includes all handling fees. A call to the Cyclones Sales Department (513-421-7825, x. 3) can make this happen. It is the perfect gift for your favorite sports fan.

THE SERIES: The Cyclones have a 32-14-6 record all-time against Johnstown, including a 15-9-1 mark at U.S. Bank Arena. Under Head Coach Chuck Weber, the Cyclones have a 15-5-4 slate against this opponent from the Keystone state.

WEBER REACHES CENTURY MARK: Head Coach Chuck Weber picked up his 100th regular season victory on November 29. Now in his third season directing the Cyclones, Weber has a 102-51-16 mark (.648 winning percentage). The win on November 30 allowed Chuck to pass Warren Young for the club lead in regular season wins. Young needed three full seasons to post his 100-86-24 (.533) record.

HOULE COMES UP BIG: Cyclones goaltender Martin Houle has a 5-1-1 record since joining the club on November 18, with a 2.19 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. While Houle has three games with Las Vegas that factor into his season statistics--his numbers with Cincinnati alone would give him the ECHL's fifth-best goals against average on the circuit.

LATENDRESSE LIGHTS ‘EM UP: Cyclones forward Olivier Latendresse leads the ECHL in goal scoring with 17. He has also assembled a 15-game point scoring streak, the longest current stretch in the league and second-longest in club history behind David Desharnais' 27-game effort last season (12/31 through 3/12). Latendresse has collected 13 goals and eleven assists for 24 points during this time. Last season, Olivier averaged 1.458 points per game with Cincinnati (7-28-35 in 24 games) and is tallying 1.36 per contest this year. Projecting his 17 goals and 10 assists for the remainder of the year, he is on pace to score 55 goals and add 42 assists for 97 points.

CYCLONES ARE ‘BEST IN CITY': The Cyclones learned November 7 that they were named by Cincinnati Magazine in its annual ‘Best of' issue, as the ‘Best Pro Sports Team'. The team won the award on the heels of their first Kelly Cup championship, ECHL record 71 wins between the regular season and playoffs and 36 percent increase in attendance--best in professional hockey in North America. The ‘Best of' edition of Cincinnati Magazine is on news stands now.

HAVEN'T WE PLAYED THIS GAME BEFORE?: The Cyclones have had 34 different players play already this season. Cincinnati used 46 players all of last season, in claiming the Kelly Cup. Head Coach Chuck Weber has used 16 different lineups this season.

ATTENDANCE NUMBERS UP: The Cyclones have drawn 27,570 to the first eleven games at U.S. Bank Arena this season, an average of 2,506--which is 21st in the ECHL. Through the first eleven games of last season, the club drew 18,715--an average of 1,701. Cincinnati did not reach 27,570 until the 17th home game of 2007-08--reaching 31,307 through those 17 dates, an average of 1,841 as of January 4, 2008. Attendance this season is up 47.3 percent over the first eleven dates of a year ago--when the Cyclones had the highest percentage increase in attendance (36.8 percent) of any pro hockey team in North America. The 47.3 increase is the highest among all pro hockey teams this season (Tulsa-CHL-43.3 percent ranks second).

MORE ATTENDANCE: The Cyclones are averaging 805 more fans than in 2007-08 through the first eleven home games. Only three other teams in minor pro hockey are accomplishing the same feat, as Philadelphia and Springfield (AHL) and Tulsa (CHL) are increasing attendance by 800 or more fans per game.
