Cougars Fall Under Wizards\' Spell
June 7, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL â The Kane County Cougars never led Tuesday night against the Fort Wayne Wizards, dropping the finale of the four-game series 4-3 in front of 7,261 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Raul Padron led the Cougars with two hits and two RBI.
Cougars starter Derek Tharpe rebounded from a tough start last Thursday in West Michigan to go seven innings. The three runs he allowed came in the Fort Wayne fourth. Ruben Mora had a two-run single, and Matt Bush's fielder's choice produced a tally for a 3-0 game. The Cougars responded in the bottom half against Wizards starter Clay Hamilton. Ryan Ruiz walked, Javier Herrera singled and Padron drove in Ruiz with a single to make it 3-1. Myron Leslie followed with a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 score that remained until the eighth inning after both starters left.
Marcus McBeth relieved Tharpe and gave up a run without allowing a hit. A walk, stolen base, wild pitch and sacrifice gave the Wizards another two-run advantage. Padron delivered an RBI single in the bottom half against Ricky Steik for a 4-3 mark that became the final.
Tharpe (1-5) took the loss after seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out six. Hamilton (8-3) got the win after giving up two runs on four hits in seven frames. Matt Varner worked the ninth for his league-leading 18th save.
The Cougars (25-33) have an off-day Wednesday before beginning a series Thursday night at 7 CDT in Clinton against the LumberKings. Jared Trout (2-1, 2.55) will start for Kane County.
