South Bend Silver Hawks News Release


South Bend, IN – The Cedar Rapids Kernels went into Tuesday night's game with 38 home runs on the season, putting them fifth in the Midwest league in that offensive category. Tuesday night the Kernels were also offensive, slamming five round trippers in an 11-8 win over the Hawks in eleven innings.

The Hawks (35-24) led 1-0 heading to the third inning when the Kernels were able to grab the lead. With two out in the inning, Freddy Sandoval singled to center and Michael Collins followed with a two run home runs to left field giving the Kernels a 2-1 lead. They increased their lead on the very next pitch, when Aaron Peel crushed a ball over the left field wall and out of the park making it a 3-1 lead for the Kernels.

The Hawks pulled within one in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundout by Javier Brito and tied the game in the fourth on Wilkin Castillo's groundout.

The Hawks tool the lead in the fifth inning. Agustin Murillo tripled to open the inning and scored on Javier Brito's run scoring double to left centerfield. After Carlos Gonzalez struck out, Cesar Nicolas singled to put runners at the corners. Allen Mottram was the next batter and he delivered a scoring fly ball to center plating Brito to give the Hawks a 5-3 advantage.

Cedar Rapids (25-34) scored a run in the top of the sixth, with the Silver Hawks countering with a run in the home half to make it 6-4 after six frames.

South Bend took a 7-4 lead into the eighth inning. That is when reliever Josh Perrault got himself into hot water. He started the inning by walking Jordan Renz. Catcher Tommy Duenas was the next batter and he deposited a Perrault pitch over the left field wall cutting the Hawks lead to 7-6. After Alexis Casilla fanned for the first out of the inning, Sean Rodriguez knotted the game with his third home run of the year to tie the game at seven.

Both teams scored a run in the tenth. In the eleventh, Nate Sutton singled and with one out scored when Tommy Duenas blasted hi second homer of the game and third of the year. Cedar Rapids added another run for insurance to claim two-of-four games in the series.

The Silver Hawks have an off day Wednesday before opening a four game series against the Swing of the Quad Cities in Davenport, IA. The Hawks return to the Cove Monday, June 13 to open a seven game homestand against the Dayton Dragons and West Michigan Whitecaps.
