Kernels make flurry of roster moves

June 7, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Cedar Rapids Kernels announced four roster moves today including the promotion of two more players to Rancho Cucamonga of the California League.

Right-handed pitcher Frederic DeLoizaga-Carney and left-handed pitcher Nic Touchstone have been assigned to Rancho Cucamonga by the Kernels' parent organization, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Taking their places on the roster will be one current Kernel and a former one. Left-handed pitcher Joe Torres has been activated from the 7-day disabled list and right-hander Ronnie Ray has been reassigned to Cedar Rapids from Rancho Cucamonga.

The moves were announced this morning by Angels Director of Player Development Tony Reagins.

DeLoizaga-Carney was without a doubt the team's finest relief pitcher this season on a team where the bullpen has been a cause for concern. At the time of his promotion to the Quakes DeLoizaga-Carney had a team-high seven saves and a team-low 1.89 ERA in 19 innings. The Littleton, CO, native began the season in middle relief but moved into the closer's role early on when righty Mitch Arnold was placed on the DL.

Touchstone gets the call to Rancho despite recent struggles after returning from a bout with tendonitis. The southpaw was 1-4 with a 7.83 ERA in 11 games, including 4 starts. After starting the season in the rotation, Touchstone moved to the bullpen after returning to action and made seven relief appearances before his promotion.

Ray joins the Kernels after making 20 appearances for the Quakes. A 14th round draft choice of the Angels in 2002, Ray had a 1-2 record with a 5.79 ERA with all his appearances coming strictly in relief. This will be Ray's third tour of duty with the Kernels. He was 3-11 with a 5.13 ERA as a starter for the Kernels in 2003 and 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA in six games (three starts) over two stints with the team last season.

Torres is expected to make his first start of the season for the Kernels tonight in South Bend when Cedar Rapids takes on the Eastern Division leaders at 7 p.m.
