Four Kernels selected to MWL All-Star Team
June 7, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels will send three players to the Midwest League All-Star game at Peoria's O'Brien Field on June 21st with a fourth chosen for the team but unable to play because of a promotion.
Starting pitchers Bill Edwards and Rafael Rodriguez, third baseman Freddy Sandoval, and outfielder Aaron Peel were selected for inclusion on the league's Eastern Division squad. Peel will be in the starting lineup for the Eastern Division when both squads take the field on the 21st.
Because of the unbalanced divisions in the league, one team from the Western Division competes for the East each year during the All-Star game and this is the year Cedar Rapids' turn in the rotation came.
Edwards, a 29th round selection by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2004 draft, was promoted to Rancho Cucamonga of the California League last week and will not be able to participate in any of the activities lined up in Peoria. He is one of 13 players selected for recognition but unable to play because of a promotion or injury. At the time of his promotion the right-hander was 5-1 with a 3.20 ERA for the Kernels.
Rodriguez earns his first All-Star nod in his third stint with the Kernels. Plagued by injuries and inconsistency, the 20-year old Dominican right-hander has put it all together in 2005 for the Kernels and has ranked among the league leaders in ERA and strikeouts most of the season. Rogriguez currently leads all Kernels pitchers with a 2.85 ERA. He is 4-2 in 12 starts and has struck out a team-high 69 batters in 66 1/3 innings.
Sandoval was selected in the 8th round of the 2004 draft but did not make his professional debut until this spring with the Kernels because of visa issues. The University of San Diego product has been one of the most reliable bats in the Kernels' starting lineup. He currently sports a .257 average and his 32 RBI lead the team. His glove work at third has drawn the attention of many opposing managers and players and his work ethic and enthusiasm are unmatched.
Peel has made the most of his return to Cedar Rapids after an injury-plagued 2004 campaign. The Seminole, TX, resident has blistered opposing pitching to the tune of a .303 average while belting seven home runs. He hit .367 in the month of June and was named the Angels Minor League Player of the Month for his efforts.
