Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Trenton, New Jersey - Friday, December 2, 2005) Friday night the Charlotte Checkers beat a team that over the years has given them fits. Peter Worrell scored a pair of goals and Nathan Gillies notched a goal and added two assists as the Checkers upended the Trenton Titans 5-4 Friday night at Sovereign Bank Arena. A big four-goal second period propelled Charlotte to a nice lead that they would not relinquish. The win snapped a two-game Charlotte losing streak while the Checkers got its first win in the third game of a four-game road trip. Rory Rawlyk and Luke Stauffacher also scored single goals for Charlotte and Checkers goalie Pat Berrigan turned aside 32 Trenton shots to improve his record to 2-3-0.

"While we didn't get a win Friday night despite playing well, we picked up right where we left off last night and got the victory tonight," said Charlotte coach Derek Wilkinson. "Pat Berrigan played better tonight and offensively we took advantage of some opportunities to get a much-needed win. Getting Jake (Ortmeyer) back tonight was also key for us, and the players we've recently brought in are making a contribution."

Charlotte opened the scoring at 7:15 of period one as Gillies took a pass from Bellefeuille, and beat Titans starting goalie Rejean Beauchemin on a short-handed breakaway for a 1-0 Checkers advantage. The Titans tied the game 1-1 late in the period on a goal by Stephen Wood.

The Checkers got things going in the second period 1:35 in as Rawlyk back-handed a shot by Beauchemin for a 2-1 Checkers advantage. Four minutes later Worrell scored his first of two goals on the night, as he knocked in a Gillies' rebound for a two-goal Charlotte lead at 3-1.

Trenton coach Doug McKay had seen enough of Beauchemin, and replaced his starting netminder with Dustin Traylen. The Checkers kept up the offense as Juris Stals fed the puck in front to Stauffacher, who deked Traylen and scored his fourth goal of the campaign at 8:51 for a 4-1 advantage. Worrell's second of the game sent the Checkers to a 5-1 lead after two periods.

The Titans made a mild rally with a pair of goals in the final period but could get no closer, and the Checkers closed out the game with a 5-3 victory.

The win improved Charlotte's record to 8-6-1 for 18 points, with the Titans falling to 8-7-2 for 18 points. The Checkers close out their four-game road trip Saturday night with a return match in Wheeling, West Virginia against the Nailers at 7:30 p.m.

The Checkers next home game is this Monday when they'll host the Columbia Inferno at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice, at Charlotte Bobcats Arena at 7:00 p.m.
