Steelheads Fall to Wranglers, 5-3
December 3, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Wranglers' forward Matt Dzeiduszycki scored the game-winning goal with 8:49 left in regulation, as the Wranglers (12-4-2) bested the Steelheads 5-3 in front of a crowd of 5,779 from Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, NV, on Saturday night.
The loss snapped the Steelheads (13-4-1) season-best, seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1), while dropping them to 7-2-1 on the road and 7-3-1 in division play. Alaska's win over Long Beach on Saturday, coupled with the Steelheads' (27 pts.) defeat means the Aces (28 pts.) sit atop the West Division.
Steelheads' captain D'Arcy McConvey potted the only goal of the first period, scoring just 2:29 into the opening frame. McConvey took a feed from winger Garett Bembridge at the right circles in the offensive zone and ripped a shot over the shoulder of Wranglers' goaltender Mike McKenna. Defenseman Blake Forsyth picked up the other assist.
Las Vegas out-shot the Steelheads 12-9 in the first period, while both teams committed just one penalty.
The home team buried a pair of man advantage goals in the second period, as the Steelheads were penalized six times in the middle stanza. At the 3:17 mark, Charles Linglet got the Wranglers on the board with his first goal of the season. Linglet, who spent the entire season with Peoria of the AHL before being reassigned to Las Vegas before Friday's contest, was able to cash in for his first marker in a Wranglers' sweater. Forwards Steve Crampton and Dzeiduszycki added the assists.
At 11:05 of the period, defenseman Tim Hambly converted a five-on-three advantage into the Wranglers first lead of the two-game series. Hambly rifled home a shot from the circles for his third tally of the season. Forward Derek Edwardson and defenseman Christian Chartier registered the helpers.
The Wranglers held a one-goal lead and a 24-17 shot advantage after 40 minutes of play.
Crampton gave the Wranglers a two-goal cushion 40 seconds into the third period, with the team's third power play goal of the contest. Dzeiduszycki and Chartier got the assists.
The Steelheads responded with two markers just 2:41 apart by Kevin Gardner and David Bararuk. Bararuk's power play goal was his 10th tally of the season, and it tied the match at three with just over 15 minutes left in regulation. Gardner's goal was assisted by center Brad Thompson, while Bararuk's was set up by winger Mike Stutzel and Bembridge
The Wranglers would retake the lead and never look back as Dzeiduszycki (1g, 2a) netted a rebound from the crease past a sprawled out Steve Silverthorn, who was making his second consecutive start.
Derek Edwardson rounded out the scoring for the Wranglers with a goal at 14:42, as Linglet and forward Darren Lynch chipped in the assists.
Silverthorn (28 saves) suffered the loss, his second of the season. McKenna remained unbeaten; making 23 saves to improve to 5-0-1.
The Steelheads return to action at home on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:10 pm when the Victoria Salmon Kings come to Boise for a three-game set. The Stanley Cup will be on display at Qwest Arena during the contest.
