Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings earned two points in overtime last night against the Utah Grizzlies and looked to grab two more tonight in game two of the three game set. Utah broke their five game winless streak, defeating the Salmon Kings 5-3.

The Grizzlies opened the scoring quick against the Salmon Kings beating Goaltender BJ Boxma 2:38 into the first period. Forward Garett Cameron had a clear-cut breakaway from the blueline in, and shook Boxma from his crease to put Utah up 1-0.

Victoria skated right back into the game and locked the score at one at 7:17 of the first, when Forward Dustan Heintz passed the puck across Goaltender Alfie Michaud's crease, to Defenseman Simon Mangos who was pinching from the blueline. Mangos beat Michaud between the legs for his third goal of the season.

Forward Mike Wirll who recorded three assists last night, continued to produce offensively scoring his fifth goal of the season and third on the powerplay, to give the Salmon Kings the 2-1 lead. The trio of Wirll, Adam Taylor and Lanny Gare caused the Grizzlies fits through the first two periods, but so did the rest of the Salmon Kings forwards for that matter.

Taylor then extended the Salmon Kings lead when he finished the rebound off from a Mike Wirll shot, and a sprawling Michaud could do nothing but watch helplessly as the puck trickled over the line to give Victoria the 3-1 lead.

The Salmon Kings defense broke down in the third period when the Grizzlies scored four straight goals. Forward Anthony Battaglia started the spree with his seventh, followed by a natural hat-trick by Forward Jeff Miles to lift Utah over Victoria 5-3. Victoria finished the night 1-3 on the powerplay while the Grizzlies converted 1-5 of their opportunities with the man advantage. Utah out-shot the Salmon Kings 31-22 in front of 4111 fans at that Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

The Salmon Kings and Grizzlies close out their three game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00pm. Victoria will hold its first annual Teddy Bear Toss after the Salmon Kings first goal of the game.
