Johnstown Chiefs News Release

The Johnstown Chiefs finally win a shootout!

With his family in attendance, Steve Cygan put on a show. In the first period, Cygan scored his first of the year, one-timing a pass from Randy Rowe. Then, as the 6th shooter in the shootout, Cygan beat Fresno goalie, Brett Jaeger, with a backhand move for the game winner.

The Chiefs trailed 2-1 going into the third period, until Justin Kelly tied the game with a power play goal. Kelly took a feed from Paul Caponigri and deked Jaeger with a patient backhand move.

Kelly and Rowe have scored in all three games this week. Rowe has five (5) points, and Kelly has added three.

Morgan Cey was again strong in net, stopping 37 of 39. Cey and teammate Jonathan Boutin are tied for third in the ECHL with a .936 save percentage. Cey also improved his goals against average to 2.27, which places him 5th in the league.

The win over Pacific division leading Fresno improved the Chiefs to 5-7-6 and leaped them into 5th place in the North division. The Chiefs now trail Trenton by only two points for 4th place.

The Johnstown Chiefs started their west coast swing with three consecutive shootouts. The first two, against Las Vegas and Bakersfield, were stinging disappointments as the Chiefs fell to 0-5 in shootouts. The Chiefs shootout win over Fresno was their first since April 2, a 7-6 win over Dayton.

The Chiefs play two in San Diego before moving on to Las Vegas on Tuesday and then home. Next Saturday, the Chiefs will conduct their own Teddy Bear Toss. All fans are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to throw on the ice after the Chiefs first goal! Get your tickets by calling 1-800-Slapshot.
