San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - Cody McLeod and Steve Hildenbrand each notched a goal and two assists, as the San Diego Gulls pounded the Johnstown Chiefs 7-1 Saturday night, before 6,011 at the ipayOne Center.

Guillaume Fournier (two goals), Alex Kim (two goals), Chet Ferreira (two assists) and David Svagrovsky (two assists) also had multipoint games for the Gulls (8-7-3), who crept over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

San Diego, which leapfrogged over Long Beach into second place in the Pacific Division, is now unbeaten in four straight (3-0-1) and 10 of its last 12 games (7-2-3). The Chiefs (5-8-6) remain fifth in the North Division, one point ahead of the last-place Dayton Bombers.

Kim gave the Gulls an early 1-0 lead 2:09 into the first period with his first goal of the game. Rookie forward Svagrovsky dumped the puck into the Johnstown zone and, after Darren Clark nudged it toward the slot, Kim picked it up and slipped a backhander past goaltender Jonathan Boutin.

San Diego erupted with five goals in the second period, grabbing a commanding 6-0 lead. Fournier lit the lamp first 1:57 into the frame, beating Boutin with a slapper between the hash marks. Richard Keyes earned the primary assist, extending his point streak to four games. McLeod also earned a helper for his first point of the night.

Hildenbrand, a former Chief, and Darren Clark then netted back-to-back markers 43 seconds apart, quickly making it a four-goal game. Hildenbrand's came at 4:10 - his seventh tally - after putting home a slap shot from the right point. Clark tickled the twine at the 4:53 mark, depositing a backhander from just outside the crease. Hildenbrand earned an assist on the goal, Clark's second of the season.

McLeod, who also assisted on Hildenbrand's goal, found the back of the net at 10:50 for his second goal of the year and third point of the game. Hildenbrand stole the puck from a Chiefs defender and found a wide-open McLeod, who put it past an out-of-position Boutin.

The second-period scoring barrage wasn't finished though as Fournier came calling again at 16:40. Ferreira, pinching in from the left point, chipped the puck to Fournier, who darted out of the corner and beat a beleaguered Boutin for his second marker of the game - eighth of the season. Ferreira also assisted on Clark's tally.

Meanwhile, Lawson was on cruise control, stopping everything Johnstown was throwing his way. Well... just about everything. The only shot to beat the 6-foot-5-inch netminder was Gerard Dicaire's power-play goal at 8:52 of the third period. Lawson finished with 30 saves, upping his record to 6-1-1.

Kim capped the scoring 11:44 into the final stanza with his second goal of the night - fourth since joining the Gulls five games ago. Svagrovsky, who also assisted on Kim's first marker, found his open linemate all alone in front of the net and Kim easily redirected it home.
