Checkers go 2-1 on three-game road trip

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers picked up four-of-six possible points on a three-games-in-three-days road trip last week. The Checkers began the trip with a disappointing 3-6 loss to the Wheeling Nailers on Thursday, only to rebound Friday with a 5-3 win over the defending Kelly Cup champion Trenton Titans. The Checkers traveled back to Wheeling on Saturday and picked up a 3-1 win, scoring all three goals in the third period. Nathan Gillies scored a goal in each game and finished the three-game stretch wit five points (3g, 2a). Peter Worrell and Juris Stals each registered a two-goal game on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Defenseman Rory Rawlyk continues to lead the Checkers point scorers (15) as he tallied three points over the three games (1g, 2a).

Thursday, December 1, 2005 @ Wheeling, L, 3-6 The Charlotte Checkers deserved a better fate in their 6-3 loss to the Wheeling Nailers Thursday night in West Virginia. Charlotte led 3-1 midway through the second period before surrendering five un-answered goals the rest of the way, A soft goal, a broken stick on a clearing attempt, and two Wheeling power-play goals all contributed to the Nailers comeback.

Wheeling received a hat-trick from Kurtis McLean and a pair of goals by Terry Virtue while Charlotte got goals from Rory Rawlyk, Nathan Gillies and newcomer Ryan Fultz. Checkers goalie Pat Berrigan took the loss stopping 25 of 30 Wheeling shots, Nailers netminder Andy Franck notched the win with 27 saves. The loss was Charlotte's sixth in its last eight games.

Friday, December 2, 2005 @ Trenton, W, 5-3 Friday night the Charlotte Checkers beat a team that over the years has given them fits. Peter Worrell scored a pair of goals and Nathan Gillies notched a goal and added two assists as the Checkers upended the Trenton Titans 5-4 Friday night at Sovereign Bank Arena. A big four-goal second period propelled Charlotte to a nice lead that they would not relinquish. The win snapped a two-game Charlotte losing streak while the Checkers got its first win in the third game of a four-game road trip. Rory Rawlyk and Luke Stauffacher also scored single goals for Charlotte and Checkers goalie Pat Berrigan turned aside 32 Trenton shots to improve his record to 2-3-0.

Saturday, December 3, 2005 @ Wheeling, W, 3-1

The Charlotte Checkers dug down deep on the tail end of a tough, three games in three nights roadtrip by defeating the Wheeling Nailers 3-1 Saturday night in West Virginia. Juris Stals had a pair of goals for the Checkers and goalie Pat Berrigan (3-3-0) played his best game of the season with 25 saves. Nathan Gillies also had a goal for Charlotte which proved to be the game winner.
