Chiefs Gut-Out Win

December 5, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Despite a short bench, despite being shorthanded early in the first period, despite a lot of nagging injuries and five games in six days, the Johnstown Chiefs willed themselves to 5-4 shootout win in San Diego on Sunday afternoon.

The Chiefs scored two shorthanded goals-on the same minor penalty to Jean Desrocher-to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Brady Greco went top shelf after taking a feed in the slot from Justin Kelly. One minute and eleven seconds later, Steve Cygan intercepted a pass in the Chiefs zone and streaked into the Gulls zone before chipping a pass over to Tarabrin, whose nifty backhand move beat Gulls goalie, Tom Lawson.

Joe Tallari added a power play goal not long afterwards and the Chiefs led 3-0.

Later in the first, Steve Cygan took a stick to the throat, which forced him to miss the rest of the game. With Adam Henrich and Paul Caponigri unable to play because of injuries, the Chiefs were down to just 5 defensemen and 9 forwards.

The Gulls rallied to tie it at 3, and then again at 4 after Justin Kelly scored, but the Chiefs would not surrender. In their most gritty performance of the season, the Chiefs won the shootout (2-1), with Randy Rowe getting the winner.

Justin Kelly added three points, a goal and two assists. Kelly is riding a 7 game scoring streak.

The Chiefs are in Las Vegas, Tuesday, before returning home to face the Reading Royals on Friday. Get your tickets for Friday's game, by calling 1-800-Slapshot.
