Checkers Conquer California with Six-Game Sweep

(Charlotte, NC - Monday, December 15) - The Checkers (11-9-3 for 25 points) will finally conclude their season-long, seven-game, road trip this Tuesday at South Carolina, before playing their first home game in 18 days Saturday at Cricket Arena against Gwinnett. Charlotte finally arrived back east after completing one of its' best road trips in team history by winning all six games in the state of California, and winning them in convincing fashion. The suspense continues Tuesday as the Checkers will put their ECHL-high six-game winning streak on the line against the Stingrays five-game winning streak. Charlotte will also try to transfer its' winning ways from the road to home ice to improve its' 1-6-1 home record on Saturday. The Checkers will close out their pre-Christmas season Sunday with a 4:05 p.m. start in Columbia.

THIS WEEK:

TUESDAY'S PREVIEW: The Checkers will conclude their seven-game road trip Tuesday when they'll travel to Charleston, South Carolina to meet the Stingrays. Charlotte will pit its' six-game winning streak against the Stingrays five-game winning streak. The strange series between these two teams has seen the visiting team win the last nine meetings. The last time a home team won a game in the series was Feb 16, 2002, when the Checkers beat South Carolina at Cricket Arena 4-0. South Carolina begins the week just ahead of the Checkers in fifth place in the ECHL's Southern Division with a record of 13-9-1 for 27 points. The Stingrays are coached by Jason Fitzsimmons, and are affiliated with the NHL's Edmonton Oilers and AHL's Toronto Roadrunners.

SATURDAY'S PREVIEW: Charlotte will play its' first home game in 18 days when they'll host the Gwinnett Gladiators at Cricket Arena for the fourth and final time this season. The visiting team has won the first five meetings between the teams this season. Starting the week the Gladiators are holding down first place in the ECHL's Central Division of the Western Conference with a record of 17-6-3 for 37 points. Former Checkers center Brandon Dietrich is leading the Gladiators in scoring with 3g, 22a, = 25 pts.

SUNDAY'S PREVIEW: The Checkers will close out their pre-Christmas season with a game in Columbia against the Inferno. Charlotte lost 4-3 in overtime on Nov 1 in the lone meeting between the two teams so far this season. The Checkers are 1-4-1 lifetime at the Carolina Coliseum. Charlotte will play four games in Columbia this season while the Inferno comes to Charlotte only twice. Columbia starts the week in fourth place in the ECHL's Southern Division with a record of 14-6-2 for 30 points. Forward Tim Smith leads the Inferno in scoring with (7g, 17a = 24 pts). Columbia is coached by Scott White and is affiliated with the NHL's Vancouver Canucks and the AHL's Manitoba Moose.

• Checkers left wing Dave Inman has an 11 game point streak with 6g, 10a, = 16pts in that span, and is the team's leading scorer at 7g-20a=27 pts. Inman is also tied for fourth place in the ECHL for the best plus/minus at +14.

• Charlotte is 10-3-2 on the road, contrasted by a 1-6-1 mark at home.

• The Checkers have the fewest home wins (1) in the ECHL.

• Prior to his recall to Hartford on December 11, Checkers center Benoit Dusablon had a nine-game point streak alive, with 9g,8a = 17 points in that span.

• Prior to his recall to Hartford on Dec 10, Checkers right wing Brandon Cullen had a seven-game point streak alive with 6g, 5a = 11 pts in that span.

• Dave Inman is tied for the lead in the ECHL in short-handed goals with three.

• The Checkers are tied for 1st in the ECHL in shorthanded goals with seven (Blaz Emersic (2), Dave Inman (3), an Cuthbert and Kengo Ito)

• With the signing of Japanese center, Daisuke Obara, the Checkers became the only professional hockey team in North America to have two Japanese players on their roster at the same time. Defenseman Kengo Ito is the Checkers other Japanese player.
